I'm making cookies for my son to take to his preschool for his birthday. There is a boy there who is allergic to dairy and all I would have to do is change out the butter for butter flavored shortening for the recipe to be ok for him. But will it still taste good if I do this? Will it change how the cookies bake up?

It works great and actually makes a chewier cookie. You are also supposed to add water if you are not using any butter. It should say on the package how much to add. Shortening has less moisture that butter. I want to say that it is 3 teaspoons, but I am not sure.

It'll taste fine, but the texture of the cookie won't be the same as it would be if you followed the recipe exactly and used 1/2 butter. Generally, shortening makes cookies chewier/softer and butter makes them crisper. If the cookies would have turned out semi-chewy using your recipe, using all shortening will make them much softer. That's fine--I like soft cookies! When will you be dropping by with the extras? :D

I think it would be ok...The 1/2 butter 1/2 shortening thing was probably for taste reasons so the use of the butter flavored shortening has all your needs covered. Good luck with em!

I tried and they are pretty good. But try a test batch first.
