Vomiting is a defence mechanism. The body is emptying the stomach in order to get rid of something it doesn't like. You may have eaten too much, suffer food poisoning, drank too much. Some diseases or infections can bring about vomiting. The Cleveland Clinic Health Information Centre has a full article on it if you want to check it out.
