i'd say...do everything you possibly can to avoid smashing someone's face in. but, if you really need to defend yourself, by all means...

Since you posted this in martial arts, I'm assuming you're aware that martial arts is all about DISCIPLINE, so if you're into martial arts so you can learn to beat the crap out of people, you're in it for the wrong reason. Every martial art is a deadly art and must only be used for personal development and defense, NEVER for attack. You should NEVER fight unless you have absolutely no choice, and even then you should only use the level of force that is necessary to subdue your opponent. So, to answer your question: If the choices are turn the other cheek or smash their face in, turn the other cheek.

after teaching us a particularly/potentially deadly technique, our Great Grand Master always follows up with 'then get yourself a good lawyer.'
To me... this kind of explains it all. If it's a life threatening situation, of course, i choose to smash their face in. If it's someone being an idiot, I'll choose to turn the other cheek. Most times, I could care less about what idiots think or say about me.

well as Jerseyboy said, it really depends on the situation you're in, the best thing to do if someone challenges you is turn and walk away, because you don't have to prove anything to anyone.
it takes the bigger man to walk away from a petty little "show me what you got" challenge. so you're not a chicken or coward for walkin' off.
but there are people that'll only respond in leaving you alone by you displaying violence, meaning you don't have to allow them to kick your a**, defend yourself and do what you have to protect yourself.
If the person's annoying you with the "show me what you got" challenge. they're just showing how little maturity they possess and by fighting them you're only giving them what they want and showing you can go to their maturity and not rise above the schoolyard mentality
and as it was also said you don't have to smash their face in, Martial Arts has never been nor will ever be about aggression, but by a little forceful action in response of their aggression will usually give them enough incentive not to bother you again.
but again sometimes there's no way but to fight, but should always be avoided until absolutely necessary.
As it was also said; if you're in Martial Arts for the fighting aspect, then you're wasting your time and learned nothing, because Martial Arts disciplines you not to use what you know unless it's necessary, if you're receptive enough to understand it.

I am not sure anyone can answer this correctly. This depends greatly on the situation.
My personal philosophy is to walk away.
If some one is taunting you, walk away. If someone talks smack walk away.
If someone throws a punch and it is stopped and they do not try again, walk away.
If you are struck, defend yourself and walk away when it is safe to.
The math on this dictates walking away is usually safer. The longer and more often you fight the higher the chances that you are going to get injured.
I study martial arts to defend myself not to get into fights. Walking and running away count as self-defense. Escaping the situation without harm should be your primary goal. Often walking away is enough to do this.
Remember, a fight is a willing physical clash of egos that either party could have freely walked away from.
Self-defense is another matter entirely. Self-defense is the act of preserving the self. Sometimes this involves physical confrontation others times this includes the confidence and wisdom to walk the other way.

Walk away but only because you can be sued
If it wasn't a crime to beat someone up then I would change my answer to smash their face in.

Turn the other cheek when you can, but protect yourself (both your phisyical self and mentel self) from harm. If the united states gov. will award someone over a million us dollars for mental anguish you should be able to protect your self from mental anguish. NOTE!!!!! you only us as much force is given to you, SO if someone is verbally cursing you you should be in your rights to verbally curse them back.

It all depends on the situation.
Maturity helps counsel you on when to let things go and when to stand your ground.
