Yes. Big jobs like mowing the lawn should earn money. Or try babysitting. Basic chores (like cleaning thier room) are just a part of being in a family and should not be rewarded with money. At 13 they can do things like walk the neighborhood dogs, cut grass (at home and for neighbors), rake leaves or pine straw, help clean houses, etc. We also reward our kids for good grades - A's & B's earn money, but if you get any C's, you don't earn anything...

do you draw? are you good at art? could sell some artwork online etc do you make crafts? wallets clothing belts any accessories.... sell them online play an instrument? go down to the beach or lake or whatever and play with ur case open you actually get a lot of money from that... i played the violin for a good amount of time 8th grade was my peak too. if your good at your instrument i guarentte people will be impressed and want to support you do your parents hate you? if not make a deal with them... if you do good in school ask them to treat you out buy you a gift card or something. do chores around the house get allowance. maybe 20$ a week? unless your parents are poor. and youll just do it until you get over it tel your parents it wont be forever. and follow it strictly. make a list and a due date. if its not done by that time then you dont get the money but u still have to do the chores if you wnat to try again next week. thats very understanding. make sure you explain everything and dont come off as a needy kid who just wants and wants. try it youll be surprised how nice parents can be. i understand your probably an independent person, as independent as one can be at 13, but asking for help is actually normal. nobody is superman. thats one thing i learned a little too late. haha but better now than never. im 18. if your parents dont have very much money then try developing some tasks to trade. lawn mowing etc holiday time - put up lights

I guess it is a little late to teach the value of money at age 13. Are there any chores that the teen can do to earn the cash?

i think it is very important for children to earn their own money for things that they want. It will make them appreciate the item more and have a better sense of money. Chores around the house is a good way.

Absolutely!
Set up a list of chores... things like taking out the trash, dusting the house, doing laundry, etc.
Doing the chores to earn the dough will be a good life lesson.

We got no money for free, we had to do jobs to earn it, and then we were expected to save some of it as well, a set amount every week. As soon as we were old enough we had to get Saturday jobs, and if we wanted clothes etc, we were expected to pay at least a 3rd of the cost of anything. Of course we had treats, but we also learnt the value of money, and that if you want it you have to work for it.

Oh Lord by all means! DO NOT CONTINUE to hand this child money.
There is dish washing, vaccuming, dusting, sweeping and mopping, trash removal, yard work and so on and so forth that a 13 year old could do broken up over days. Don't dump everything on them, but make them do enough to earn there privledges! We have a 16,15,13,9 and 2 year old and they all do it!

My kids get a 'family' allowance for getting good grades. In other words, their job is to go to school, do their homework and get good grades and do this or that immediately with lightheart and smile.
For extras, they can wash windows, wash the car, hose the patio, fold and hang laundry,
wash and walk the dogs, superior bedroom cleaning ;), vaccuum, dust, dishes, sweep ohh and the list goes on. Some chores require more instruction and guidance, but that's a good thing.

a 13 year old shoudl begin to realize that money does not grow on the trees in your yard. they need to do odd jobs and earn all of the money they get. therefore, understanding how it feels to work for your money and how important it is to save, invest and spend wisely. babysitting, cleaning yards, talking trash out....for neighbors too, mowing lawns, walking dogs, packing groceries at the local market, etc etc
