Start slowly...30-60 minutes a day. Increase as you get more used to the distance.

It's not about how MUCH you should walk, it's about keeping up with it. You'll see results in 3-6 weeks, if you keep it up. Even walking 15 minutes a day and eating better will make a difference!

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

You can lose weight in thirty to forty seconds of walking a day, as long as you're walking away from the table. :-)

Seriously... for me, anyway, I've come to the conclusion that I don't lose weight in the gym, I lose weight in the kitchen.

Now, walking is GREAT exercise, I think it's probably better exercise than a comparable amount of time spent on the cardio machines at the gym. And it's a GREAT exercise if you're looking to lose weight; the last time I lost a bunch of weight, walking was part of what I did.

As for weight lifting and cardio, my doctor and the personal trainer at my gym agree that doing high reps/light weights is VERY good cardio. I typically do about half an hour on the elliptical machine followed by half an hour of weights. I'm still overweight, but I have groovy biceps. :-)

A reduction of about 3500 calories will result in about a 1 pound weight loss. So you'll have to take a look at how many calories you consume, adjust that, and then burn calories via walking (1 mile burns about 110 calories). So if you eat 2000 calories a day and you walk 4.5 miles or so you may lose 1 pound a week. Good luck.

At what speed? Average for most studies indicates two miles at a brisk pace,but....depending how heavy you are now ...start at a comfortable pace to see how far that takes you! next week pick up either the pace or the distance! every week thereafter continue to increase your goals until you reach 30 minutes of walking 3 times a week at that Brisk pace! Be cautious of pavement walking as that has many setbacks for weight-lifters!
