What you want is a paint pen called DecoColor by Marvy. It's opaque, comes in different widths and lots of colors. You don't even have to varnish it or anything. It holds up pretty well. I used to get them at Michael's but you could look online.

Any local art store would have paint pens. But you can get a version of them at Walmart. They are acrylic I believe, but would work on clay pots.

I use colored Sharpees. They are available almost anywhere.
