My son is 7 and 2nd grade. He loves soccer, monster trucks, yu-gi-oh, and dogs and so do most of his friends. the girls in his class seem to like Bratz, soccer and horses. We let him spend $10 for a gift for his friends birthday parties, we spend about $20-25 for niece/nephew party.

It depends on the individual child and your relationship with them. Does he/she like sports? Video games? Books? (In my opinion, a gift card to a book store is always a great gift for any age!) If you don't know the child well, a gift card, or something you think they might like but include a gift receipt so they can exchange it if they don't like it. As for price, again, it depends on your relationship. A classmate you don't know very well? $10-15. A close friend? $15-30. It also depends on your own budget. If you don't have a lot of money to spend, homemade gifts can be wonderfully appreciated. For a girl, make a pretty beaded friendship bracelet. Or give them a homemade gift certificate for a play date, a trip to the movies or the aquarium, a picnic in the park.

Boy or girl? Since I have boys I can tell you what they like (they are 8 and 11)
Boys are big into Legos-- Many are $15-20 but some are a lot lot more!!
Mine love Nintendo DS or Gamecube games. These games are typically in the $30 price range (some more some less). Many kids these days LOVE to get gift cards to places like Best Buy or their favorite game store so they can pool their money and buy games.
As for girls, I wouldn't have a clue!

If it is family usually $15 dollars in cash or gift card for a store is appropriate. This way she can pick out her /his own clothes or toys. Best bet ask the parents what the child wants or needs.

It helps to know what the kid likes. You could get some suggestions from the Mom. Kids have a lot of wide and varying interests, and what would be cool to one might be totally lame to another. When in doubt, get a gift certificate.

Floam seems to be popular with all ages and it's fairly cheap. If it's your own kid, a new bike, roller blades, a new game for their game console(if they have one), some new books, it really depends on the interest and the sex of the 8 year old.
When I was 8 I loved books, and anything to do with the out doors or science.

When my nieces got to a certain age, I started getting them gift certificates. Go to your local mall (or thiers) and get a mall gift certificate, one that they can use at any store at the mall. Or a gift card to Walmart or something like that.

Depends if they are family or friend for me. 10 -15 should cover it and find out what they really like.
Girls are into Bratz and My Scene. Boys action figures and videos games.
A good book is always good.
