I have 3 children (3-8yrs) and i am pregnant with no 4 and looking for a new car. I really do not want a people carrier (children seem to just be sitting in a boot in these) and have found the Fiat Multipla and the Honda FR-v have 6 seats - 3 in front and 3 in back which is ideal - but can my 8 year old travel in the front or is it illegal?

Thank you for your help in advance
Cal

Well on most cars in the viser it says over 12 and certain height but i think they have to be 7 and out of a car seat to be seated in the front for you not to be ticketed. It does depend if the car has airbags because if the car does I would not put your children in the front seat bc of the airbags.
hope this helps

It depends on the state etc... If there are air bags it's never a good idea to have children in the front seat of a car. Some of the newer vehicles however have a weight sensor in the front seat and when the weight is not heavy enough, the air bag will not deploy, an 8 year old should not set off this sensor, but you'll want to check with the manufacturer.

If there are no airbags and it's an older car, an 8 year old would probably be OK, if it's legal in your state. Just make sure the safety harness is put on appropriately and use a booster seat (even though the 8 year old is sure not to like that)

Newborns ride facing the back, in the back seat. Usually they do this until at least one year of age, but follow the weight guidelines on the seat.

Children over 1 (check weight and seat guidelines...) move to a forward facing seat.

Children at 40 pounds should ride in booster seats.

At 80 pounds, your child is ready to use the seat belt. Make sure the shoulder strap hits him properly; if not, get an adjuster.
Of course, the back seat is the safest place for them, but at 80 lbs, with a properly adjusted belt, he should do fine.

Why don't you try looking up car seat rules on the internet or call the local police station, they know the rules. I think it depends on the weight of a child. They say it isn't safe under the age of twelve, but I have seen people in pick up truck with the car seat in the front so what is the difference.

I assume you're in the U.K. from your choice of cars and vocabulary. In the U.S. we wear boots, we don't put our groceries in them.

You will have to check locally to see what the law requires. Even in the U.S., laws on children in vehicles vary from state to state.

Please note that there is a difference between what is legally required and what is safest for your children. Small children like yours are safer in the back seat.

I have four children myself. When I was in France, I had to drive a Peugeot 807. I know they're not sporty, but that's the price of having a big, happy (and safe) family.

If kids are barred from the front seat under a certain age, you're going to be stuck with a 3-row people mover to say legal. Based on the models you mentioned, you're not in the US so you'll have to consult with your local authorities on that.

If you post your location, someone local to you can probably point you in the right direction.

No children in the front seat until they are least 12 years old. The air bags could kill them.
