The specific words are not obligatory, the act of acknowledgement of another human in greeting is. Nods and smiles or even just calling out their name (assuming it is known or remembered) will often work just as well.

Not necessary but a good practice but of course a cheerful tone sounds more inviting than annoying. In the work place usually subordinates feel obligated to greet superiors first as a mark of respect.

just to family members if you live with them..and if someone says it to you. It is annoying sometimes when every few seconds someone at work comes by all insanely cheery and says it. Sometimes its too early in the morning to act that way. To some people the most exciting part of their lives does not occur at 8 in the morning at work. Some of us are trying to sober up yanno. Let us recover in peace.

You need not say Good Morning, here are a few others for just an acknowledgment- Hi, Hello, Hey, Howdie, Morning, etc. It is just a courtesy thing though, so if you don't want to show courtesy that is your choice.

I HATE those things that you are obligated to say whether or not you mean them. I mean, don't say good morning to me, shut up so my morning can be peaceful- therefore good. Don't thank me for the birthday gift, let me see you use it so I know it is sincerely appreciated. The *words* have become so perfunctory they no longer have meaning. It's like tuning a radio between stations- what's the point?

You could always tell people to "get bent", or something akin to that, as a response to "good morning". I doubt that it will gain you any respect or admiration, but may gain you a few meetings in the parking lot.
What's the big deal about being courteous to your fellow employees?

I resemble something from "Dawn of the dead" in the morning. If you're lucky, you may get a grunt or some other kind of one syllable noise. I'm really not one for the cheery "Good morning! Hey, how are you today?"

Before noon it is quite polite to say "good morning'. After noon you say 'good afternoon' after 5 pm then you say 'good evening'. If you don't want to be polite then just don't talk to anyone and then you don't have to worry about it. Being polite shows you have manners and respect of others.

Yes, if someone says "Good Morning" to you, it is rude to ignore them. Anytime I've said "good morning" to someone who didn't say something back to me in acknowledgement of my greeting, it either hurt my feelings or pissed me off. Be polite, even if it's not a good morning, and give some kind of responce to your well-wishers.
