I wouldn't drink it straight. I'd mix it with Amaretto for a shot (Sicilain Kiss) or with Diet Coke or Ginger Ale for a drink.

History of Southern Comfort

Southern Comfort liqueur was invented in the heart of New Orleans' famous French Quarter in 1874 by a bartender named Martin Wilkes "M.W" Heron. Back then, whiskey was a popular drink, yet the quality was not always decent. Whiskey barrels would arrive in New Orleans from Tennessee and Kentucky down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and Heron sometimes didn't know it was even drinkable. So he began working on a recipe to create a whiskey-based drink with a consistent flavor.

As New Orleans was a thriving port city, Heron had an access to many fruits and some of the finest spices coming through the port such as Moroccan cinnamon and Mexican vanilla. He then began blending various fruits and spices together and finally perfected the recipe of Southern Comfort. The original blending recipe remains secret to this day.

Souther Comfort is great straight. Mixing it with any other liquor is merely a way of getting drunk quickly. SoCo (as it has been nicknamed) is made with fruit and spices (no caramel). Personally I find that the best way to mix SoCo is with 7up. Order it as a Southern & Seven.
