He might never lift his leg, some males don't, especially if he was fixed early on..Some males also just don't start until later in life...There is nothing wrong with him and you should really be glad because he won't be trying to mark his territory everywhere, including your house!

Congrads on the new pup! I have a 6 month old male Scottie that still does not lift a leg to go. I am not worried. As long as he goes outside & not on my carpet, its all good. Some male dogs never do the leg lift. It could be because they don't have to, don't want to, or perhaps have leg, hip or joint problems.
It is more than likely nothing, the little guy is still a pup. But if you are still worried, at his next check up with his vet, ask.

Male dogs do not lift their leg to mark territory until they are sexually mature, which in German Shepherd Dogs doesn't happen until 7-14 months old. They may take as long as 2 years to fully mature, and even then they may not lift their leg. Lifting their leg to mark is a sign of dominance, even some females do it, and many well-trained and mastered dogs will always squat. It won't make them less protective, it is just simply a sign of an alpha position.

Hi - All little pups do that. We've had several dogs and have lived with a pack for many years. One time we had a female and three males, well, she learned to lift her leg when she peed and did that till the day she died (13 years!!) so, they learn from each other, do what comes natural, respond to alpha instincts - any or all of the above - but don't worry about your pup - just make sure he learns to do it outside!

My basset hound 3 yr old male does not lift his leg either. That's okay. Lifting the leg while peeing is a learned behaviour. Your dog has to see another male dog do it, and your dog may or may not pick it up. The act is a show of dominance, and the reason male dogs pee with their leg up is so that their urine will get as high as possible on an object such as a tree, pole, etc. to illustrate that they are tall and big. My dog has seen other male dogs do it, but he is passive and has not picked up the behaviour.

LOL. Its a balance issue, at this age. Mine didn't lift a leg until he was over 5 months. My female lifts a leg and squats at the same time. He tries to do that and falls over. Give him time, there's nothing wrong with him even if he never lifts a leg when peeing.

This is normal. Male dogs lift their leg not so much to relieve themselves but more as a territory marking thing.
If you neuter your dog before he reaches sexual maturity and pee squatting still, they will still pee like they did when they were puppies, which is nice when you go on walks they are not hiking their leg on every tree they see or on your furniture inside and out. They will only pee to relieve the bladder and that is it.
Give your pup time, and he'll start marking just like the most of the other sexually mature dogs.

Some dogs will lift their leg, some won't. Don't worry everything still works.
Very few puppys lift their leg, so give the little guy a break, and a chance to grow up.

He won't start lifting his leg until he become sexually mature, which depends on the breed and individual dog can be anywhere but is usually between 6 to 11 months.
Actually, I have to discourage my 12 month old Lab from lifting his leg because it encourages marking behaviors. He doesn't squat; he stretches out and it's kind of funny to watch actually. :-P

My bf and I call it the "puppy squat". My 8 month old male dog still does it. It really isn't a big deal. In fact, I am glad he doesn't do it.
(If he had an accident... lifting of the leg may make it worse.)
