That is just it ,he is not Pope John Paul he will be impossible to follow. It will take time this man has many pressures on him , the late pontiff who shadow still falls in the worlds memory. I believe his heart is in the right place. Maybe flashbacks of the second world war and the lack of papal protection. So he spoke out maybe for that reason. I am willing to cut the man some slack what he said though hurtful to some has more truth than not which IS sad. He is human and to err is then no surprise. Hope that gives one perspective

I think we're seeing that Pope John Paul really WAS fairly special.

The job requires that arrogant certainty about the Catholic Church, and it takes a very special person to meet that part of the job requirement without being, frankly, an utter ***. John Paul was able to promote Catholicism without going off the deep end: the current guy just isn't smart enough or moral enough to do so.

Did you notice that besides the comments about Islam, in his speech he also said the same ignorant nonsense about atheism that so many of the childish posters here write? He'd fit right in, I guess, and it's really sad that they'd have put someone so childish into that kind of position.

Maybe growing up in Nazi Germany and being a member of the Hitler Youth corps until age 17 had its effect on him. Pope John Paul II, was a freedom fighter against the Nazis, and went out of his way to bring understanding and good will between religions.

First of all, thank you so much for the lovely respect you clearly showed to the Pope. That shows just how respectful you are to people of another religion than yours.

Anyway, so, you're insulting the Pope because he simply read out some facts about 900-1000 year old religious history? That Islamists used violence and hatred to spread their religion? Please rethink your sources (if you had any) before asking questions-- it'd really be best!

The words he spoke were not his own. He was reading from a 900 year old manuscript. Besides that, he apologized already. Muslims don't accept apologies nor do they ever offer them. The muslims proved the point of the manuscript by going nuts and burning everything down and even killing an innocent Nun. Was he right? I think he was and I think 900 years ago, whoever wrote that knew about the true islam too!

The pope is not a jerk, and it doesn't matter what you like. Believe it or not the world does not revolve around clueless little girls. There are more important things going on in this world that carry a little more weight than who you like and dislike. That was a useless question.

Here is a link to the English translation of the Pope's controversial speech: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2006/september/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20060912_university-regensburg_en.html

With love in Christ.

As someone else noted, he merely quoted what others have already said. And judging from the state of the world today and the reaction to the quotation, I find it difficult to disagree. For a "peaceful" religion, there certainly are a lot of "radical" Muslims.

hi, the Pope is not a guy, he is a (the) Pope, fool. I think you are a missing link to the monky zoo of believers.

He was just quoting someone else. Watch the news and listen to what he actually said. He was just saying someones else' words. He did apologize. If anyone is being the jerk it would be the people who are burning down churches and murdering nuns because they got their feelings hurt.
