I mean, they wouldnt have to do what they actually get paid and trained to do and they could get a college degree and stuff and just not have to do anything for it.

OKay this is a rather strange question, I cankind of see where you are going. The fact of the matter is that the Government is not going to have a military, just to have one. There is always going to be something that needs to be done. There is humanitarian relief. There is weather prediction. The USAF does hurricane tracking for the NWS and NOAA. There are people to guard and if war would cease to exist, then the military would not go away it would simply get smaller as the amount of work would be less. Take Clinton for example. We did not fight a major WAR during his administration and as a result there was a major draw down in the armed forces. A lot of bases were closed and it became harder to re-enlist or even get in. There will always be a need for a Military when you are not at war. If you don't believe me then simply take a look at other nations who are not fighting any kind of conflict. I would be willing to bet they have some kind or Army or Air Force or something that they keep in reserves and I guarantee that they do more than people who are on a tradional welfare plan. I understand that you are saying the Military currently is not a type of welfare, but you should really be more sensative to people who take offense easily. I serve in the USAF and I was not offended, but I have rather thick skin. Good luck and hopefully you get some intelligent answers.

A rather silly question... if we NEVER went to war, we wouldn't have needed a standing military, therefore the question would be moot.

However, please note the fact that during the Great Depression... admission to the military was VERY difficult as there was a limited budget and limited spaces.

ALSO, note that the Roosevelt Government formed the Conservation Corps (CC) and Works Program Administration (WPA) AS forms of welfare... giving work to unemployed young men. This also had the effect of moving the unemployed out of the cities into the country were they would be less likely to engage in riots.

Following the end of the Draft in the 1970's... some thought of the military AS a welfare program... poor training, low education, drug use.

NOW, the military requires a high-school education (the USMC wouldn't even accept a GED), and expects behavior and adherence to rules and regulations that are MOST "un-welfare program". The Military expects work, hard work, and ethical behavior.

Military Pay is a REWARD... a compensation for WORK. Welfare is a hand-out to often shiftless, lazy, lawless individuals.

Let me ask you do you think that all these soldiers are sitting around in army gear playing with guns and building forts? They have actual jobs in the military so no they dont just sit around waiting for wars to happen. They are getting training in just about every single job field that is out there in the civilian world. SO they dont just get paid and trained to fight wars. So instead of attacking the military why dont you go attack the people who actually abuse the welfare system!

If that were the case and the military was nothing but another welfare program.....the military would be full of liberals....getting paid too sit on their asses....but with them getting paid to do that now the way things are, why would they join the military.....real American's do that.....not just sit here like you and trash talk and condemn anything the military does..

Thank God the men and women in our military do not think the way you do.....they are their to defend this nation and the people of this nation...sad too say even people like you ......

what an insensitive question since we do happen to be at war with our soliders putting on the line for your freedom...

In no-war time we still have people stationed overseas and as for training-this is an on going thing-so that we are prepared. Getting their college paid for I think is a small price to pay for all they are expeted to do as well as their families.

Did ou ever wonder why we are the best military in the world?

No. The military is not simply to fight wars. It's there partly as a form of insurance and partly to discourage attacks by potential aggressors. They also serve other purposes like humanitarian missions.

No its not a welfare program .
Show me a place on welfare you can get your hands on a gun , or a tank , or move tons of humanitarian supplies
BTW Since you want to consider it unnecessary to have a armed force , maybe we should get rid of FEMA too .
Since we don't have a natural disaster every day

you need to reflect on that question. I am glad we have people in the military.... think about it ...what would you do if someone tryed to attack us .. you should be proud of our troops.. service men and women ,,,each and everyone of them have a duty to perform., and their are some even dieng for our freedom.... and also what do you mean by .. just not doieng anything for it??? what do u think they do just sit around all day ,,, no they probably do more in one day than u do in a week ,, thanks

If we never went to war, think of the military as INSURANCE. Their presence would HELP us not having to go to war. If we did not have a military, we may not have a war, but WE PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE LIBERTY.

No, they would be stationed at home to help with other things, such as defense and be able to devote more troops to possibly other things like trafficing borders.

Also, we would be keeping peace in other countries by sending more troops over there.
