Saffron

"Saffron prices at wholesale and retail rates range from US$500/pound to US$5,000/pound (US$1100–US$11,000 per kilogram). In Western countries, the average retail price is $1,000/pound"

Truffles are slightly less expensive

"The Tuber magnatum truffles sell between 200€ and 400€ per hectogram ($1000–$2000 per pound). "

Most expensive? Truffles, by a wide margin. It isn't a plant that can be artificially grown, as in a greenhouse, or something that can be planted in a field. It grows only in a very few places -- near an oak forest, for starters -- and needs perfect climatic conditions. Then you have to specially train pigs or dogs to smell out the truffles. If it's pigs you are training, you have to be able to get in there and grab the truffle before the pig eats it (they like them too) but it's easier with the dog.
But the bottom line is, I think it's a status sort of thing because I've tried them and they don't taste that great. But then, that's just my opinion.

Darn, I was going to say truffles too. The next thing I would have to say would be a 1950's bottle of Bordeaux. (Well the grapes where grown in the ground) I've seen bottles for $400 +

As long as it grows in the ground? probably Truffle. Only specially trained pigs or dogs can detect it, and only by smell. Very rare type of mushroom.
