No less than 3 times a week. But 4-5 times is even better if you're able. Using the gym should consist of cardio and weight training.

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

I think you are asking the wrong question. What are your goals? Are you trying to lose weight, build muscle, both? The right question is, "How do I make my body look like/feel like ...(fill in the blank). The gym is just a small picture. If you are a beginner trying to build muscle, train each muscle group twice a week. So if you did upper body monday, and lower on tuesday, take wednesday off and resume on thursday and fridayfor a total of 4 days a week weight training. Always separate your cardio and weight training. If you want to do cardio, do it on your off days, or do it in the morning and weight train in the afternoon. And do cardio 3-4 days a week 20-40 minutes. If you MUST do cardio at the same time as you weight train, always do it after the weights. Remember, diet is 70%, so eat plenty of protein (1gram for every pound of bodyweight) and eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day vice 3 ginormous insulin spiking meals. Happy training!

You need to go at least 3 times a week to get any benefit. It is better to go 4 to 5 times or daily if possible.

at least 3 times a week. make sure you do both cardio and weight training. A few more days wouldnt hurt though. I read somewhere that its best to go every other day to let your muscles heal.

Depends what the purpose is...and the types of exercise you're going to do. At least 3 times if you just want to improve overall fitness.
