The best thing for you to do so that you wont be holding both versions in your memory is this....carefully read...
If you are using a HP computer ONLY!!
Restart your computer.. while restarting press the F10 key repeatedly. You will be brought to a screen where you will see something that says "setup". You will see tabs at the top. Near the end you will see one that says BOOT. Click on this. You will see severall things in there, what you are looking for is your cd drive. You need to move it to the top of the list. When you do this, press exit with saving changes
This will make sure that your cd drive is the first thing that is booted up when you turn on your computer.
Next step
Put your XP disc in the cd drive and restart your computer.
When you restart you will very briefly see a screen that says "to boot from cd press any key" This will disappear quickly so you must be fast.
Ok now when the installation screen shows it will ask you if you want to update or do a clean install. You want to do a clean install in order to save space.
It will then ask you about your partitions. Which ever drive that you use... C or D...click on it and press delete...(dont freak out) it will ask you if you are sure, press y. Now it will say that you have so much unpartioned space. You now want to partition it back. When you have recreated the partion you are ready to install the disk on the clean or as it says RAW partion. The steps are spelled out for you then. You will have to do some downloading of updates and patches from Microsoft but your pc will be clean and ready to go. If you have any questions feel free to email me anytime.

for removing win 98 and win xp u must have a win xp cd with u and a valid serial no. now, back up your important data on a cd or a removable drive. Insert your Win xp cd and reboot your machine. The win xp setup window should open ... follow the details. Supposing you already had win 98 on C: drive, select that drive for installation of win xp. that drive will be formatted only and your drives wont be touched. Follow the automated installation and enjoy your win xp .....

You don't need to delete anything. XP installs right on top of 98.
