Well, the Mushroom Bureau claims they have all kinds of nutritional value. So I would say they do count.

"5 a day" is a recommendation that is not based on proper scientific findings, it is way out of date.

Canadian and British governments carried out extensive research recently which indicates the phytonutrient content of foods such as fruit and vedge is far less than thought.

What are doing by sticking to some guidelines is outstanding, I applaud all who do. One of the world's top scientists in this field recently said "supplimenting our modern diet is no longer a luxury, it is a necessity". I am certainly not going to argue with a guy who has 7 phd's in this field.

It stands to reason, if mass harvesting has drawn the goodness from the ground, it isn't going to be present in the plants and fruits. Also, "ripeness" only exists in fruit and vedge for at most 48 hours after harvesting, regardless of food manufacturers claims that their "processing" seals the goodness in. The easiest way to look at it is that the plant/fruit etc will start using the nutrients it has stored inside it to try and survive itself, once it has been picked.

Anyway, just a bit of info from the latest science available.

Take care.
