This always baffled me -- 'chicken or the egg', but not because it didn't have an answer, but because it did and no one seemed to notice it!

Let us say there is a set of genes which we agree define 'chickeness'. At some point, there were two near-chickens that bred and laid an egg, and in this egg, there was a chicken that met our definition of 'chickeness'. It was genetically similiar enough to the near-chickens that as breeding continued, chickeness was propagated.

Therefore, the egg came first. QED.

The egg-chicken mated with an egg-chicken and some babies were eggs and some were chickens. Oh, and some were still egg-chickens. I think the male egg-chicken 'came' first.

Or maybe, 2 hens decided to get artificially inseminated before there were any chickens, thus the egg came first. That does bring up the question, which came first, the hens or the chicken sperm bank.

I need to get out more.

See, it goes back to a time when God was a kid working as a short order cook at a big Celestial Denny's. IF the customer wanted hot wings, it was the chicken, but if, as I suspect, he was a stoner insearch of a Grand Slam breakfast, the egg came first.

If God was the Creator as described in the Bible, then the chicken came first (Genesis 1:21, "and every winged fowl after his kind"). If the evolutionary process, however, was what happened, then the egg came first--laid by a near-chicken.

The chicken came first. The rooster came second and the egg came later.

according to Evolution theory a reptile evolved into birds. so the Chicken would have evolved first then laid egg to produce more...
According to Creationist, god created all living entity and then with that the system for them to reproduce. Hence again Egg would come later :)

The chicken!

it had to be the egg since the chicken that came out of that egg was likely a mutation of whatever laid that egg.
