Normally, I am of the belief that there are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners but I have to say that I changed mymind somewhat about this even through I still believe that all pit bulls are not mean.

A Presa Canario is not a dog for someone with children, or a novice dog owner. Where I live in south Florida , There was recent case where a woman was killed by her Presa Canario while giving him a bath. From what I saw on the news, even though it's not mentioned in the attached link, the dog was not normally aggressive and for a reason that will never be known, the dog turned on its owner.

I personally don't know anything about this particular breed. . . . but I do know that alot of people are quick to judge something that they have only heard about via the media. They really don't know anything but quick to give a negative comment.

This is not a dog they have personally been around or raised. Do you feel me????

I have two pitbulls and the same thing is said about that breed. Pitbulls are wonderful family oriented pets who are great with children. Loyal, funny, smart, energetic, etc.

Go to Google and enter "preso canerio" and see what that brings up and read about the breed. Get your own info and follow your heart on what you think is true or what you want to deal with.

If you are first time dog owner, I would think this is a breed to not get with or without children. Pitbulls are not recommended for people who have never owned a dog before. They are great dogs but they are stubborn at times and you have to be stern with them. NOT MEAN OR ABUSIVE JUST STERN TO LET THEM KNOW WHO IS THE BOSS.

It is not the breed it is the owner and how the dogs are raised and treated. A german shepherd can attack and kill if there is problem with how it was treated or raised. I am personally scared of the so-called "ankle biters". (I need my ankles in order to walk, I don't want them attacked because of a crazed chihuahua!!) :D lol
Those can be mean & viscious dogs.

If you choose to not go with a preso, I would recommend an American pitbull terrier. Read on this breed as well. I love my pits and they are around my grandchildren on a daily basis.

"As a guardian breed with man-stopping ability there is no dog that is more effective than the Canary Dog. It remains and incredibly powerful and fearless animal, it is known for its great devotion to its human family, and it is known to accept children in the home. This is a dog that will stay by its master's side at all times and is never known to stray. This dog is protective by nature and will not hesitate to attack anyone whom it perceives as a threat to its family or home. Such an attack could only be a hopeless situation for any man involved."

punish the deed, not the breed!..as a responsible pitbull owner i am appalled at the general prejudice i recieve when others hear that i am the proud owner of a pit bull..if you choose to purchase a presa, get your dog the proper training, and read up on breed specific legislation in your area..be aware that your choice may not be the most popular one in the eyes of the general public and if you choose to be an ambassador to the breed, take time to educate the community about your well trained, loving, family pet..

The Presa Canario breed is known for its calm temperament, which is often referred to as the "island temperament." It is considered "gentle and noble" with the family, and distrusting of strangers. The Presa Canario forms a strong bond with its master and human family and can be very protective. The breed is intelligent and is known to possess a "severe gaze."

In some situations, the Presa can be aggressive toward other dogs and animals, even humans in rare cases. Once the dog has been socialized and trained, this becomes the exception instead of the rule. Many Presas share their homes with birds, cats, dogs, horses, reptiles and other animals.

Presa Canario is a dominant breed (a characteristic common to all bullbreeds) and requires socialization as a pup and throughout its life. Basic obedience training is also recommended.

It could be said that Presa Canario is of somewhat jealous nature, towards other dogs, asking for the master's complete attention
Also,
The Presa Canario is increasing in popularity as a personal protection and protection sports dog.

A dog this large and specifically bred for hunting and guarding I would not recomment for a child. I like to stick to something smaller that if it did bit would not cause death or serious disfigurement.

I have 4 children aged 4-10. I have a pug- absolutely wonderful with kids! A Welsh Corgi- again, a great dog with children- she is not too small- heavier boned and too short to bite faces.lol Hope this helps.

While I do believe this breed can do fine with children, it is NOT a breed for a novice dog owner. Many, many are sweet, good natured pets, but these are the ones who have experienced owners who understand dog behavior and put in the time to train and socialize their pets. They are very time consuming to own. You have got to commit to obedience classes, and socializing in addition to that time. You need to know how to pick the best breeder and the best puppy from that litter. You do NOT want a 150lb dog that was bred for aggression!

If you are looking for a dog that will be intimidating, and protective, but do not want to sacrifice your children's safety, then think more towards a Boxer, Bullmastiff or English Mastiff. All are protective, and their size and appearance are somewhat scary, but they are easier for beginning owners. Once you successfully own one of these breeds, you will be better able to handle a Presa, if you are still interested.

These dogs are considered to be a part of the Pit Bull family. I own a pit bull, but I have had her spayed, and we have worked with her and socialized her very well. I also own a rottweiler and a great dane.

The dog you are describing gets to be a very large dog, and unfortunately there are not a lot of good searches on this type of breed. You must remember, whatever breed you buy for your home, you must work with it, to help it be the best family member you have. Do not leave them outside, chain them, or treat them any differently than you would your child. Dogs look to us as their providers, and in return if neccessary they will protect us. My dogs are NOT vicious, they do NOT attack, because they have been socialized with everyone we are friends with including children. I have two boys who were 3 & 5 when we got the rottie, and he is awesome.

Rotties and Danes are good with children, they are protectors, and rotties are hearders as well.

If you are looking for a good pet for your family, look into rescue dogs, these are dogs that have been taken out of a bad situation, or were no longer wanted, and need homes. I would consider a much different breed than the one you are describing, I just cannot find any good search results on them.

Absolutely not. They are bred for aggression. About five years ago two preso canerio dogs attacked and KILLED a neighbor in an apartment building here in San Francisco. This was an adult woman and the dogs were with their female owner.

Absolutely not a dog you would want to raise around your children.

Another incidence here in San Francisco recently: Two adult unneutered and unspayed family pit bulls attacked and killed a twelve year old boy, the son of their owner and not a stranger to the dogs.

I don't think any dog is necessary for 3 children just ask yourself if they did,nt have a dog has kids will they loose out on life are you sure you are not getting a dog for your self wait till they can decide for them selves then they can look after it all to often parents supposedly buy a so called pet for the kids then end up after novelty wears off not interested in it at all any canerio which is Italian for canine you can never trust a animal 100% with children you would be better of getting them something else

Yes, of course.
These dogs have a bad rep, just like pit bulls. But if you train and raise them right, they can be kind and affectionate pets. Although they were originally bred for fighting, they CAN be a family dog. Don't listen to all the negative things people will say about them; these dogs can be quite family oriented, loving, and protective. Check out www.wikipedia.com for more info.

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.
