well, I can't say that it is necessarily normal, but I don't think it's bad, if you are concerned you can talk to your vet. I have one cat that has the loudest purrr when he really gets going that it can wake you out of a dead sleep. and his brother has a very soft pur that you can hardly ever hear unless you are right up with your ear against him or you feel his throat. on the other hand the one that purrs really loud doesn't meow very much and the one with the soft purr Will meow a lot.

Totally normal. I've heard some cats never do. Still others are so quiet that you may never detect it. If you can sense vibration in the throat, then there is purring going on....just quiet. Our male purrs a lot, but it's hard to tell unless you put your ear right up to his side (which sometimes makes him stop, lol). Our female purrs up a storm....but our male is more affectionate. Go figure:)

I have a 4 year old female and purrs even when she is angry and a ` year old male that I have only heard purr once. I think he is too busy getting into trouble to slow down enough to purr.

All cats are different. We have had cats who purr like tractors, the one we have currently you can only hear if you hold her up to your ear. I think some don't purr at all.

Cat's don't always need to purr to show contentment... I have 3 cats, and strangely enough, the MOST affectionate one NEVER purrs.

I think that as the cat's body gets larger the vibrations from purring are not as noticeable as when they are young and smaller. This is why little kittens seem like such loud purrballs.
I don't seem to pay much attention to my five cats purring. Sometimes I detect it when I am grooming, petting and loving on them. I know they are happy and well-adjusted.

They are cats, what do you expect??
They look at the owner and state, "Look at what I can make this guy do"
Dogs look at their owners and state, "What can do to satisfy this guy into playing with me and feed me?"
