Black is neither.
Black is NOT a color. Black is lack of color or lack of light.
Black is not a shade. Gray is a shade of white.
Close a windowless room and you get black which is lack of light. The
astronomical object black hole has very gravitation force and allow no
light to escape.
You can mix dye or pigment to get black. However, white dye or
pigment must be white to begin with and cannot be produced with mixing
color dye or pigment. Why? It is subtractive color. When all the
color are subtracted, you got black!
White is a color of all color! Black is NO color.
Gray is a shade of neutral white.

You could say that the "eyes" have it lol because in order to truly understand color, you would first have to understand how the eye perceives color. (and that has to do with the rods and cones located in the eye-there's great information out there on this just google/jeeves color perception)

I mix my own black using the primary colors red, blue, and yellow because I just figured that the "Masters" didn't have a Hobby Lobby and therefore had to make they're own black. It's a bit sluggish, but I use it along with dioxizine purple and create some pretty great shading effects.I hope this helps but in the meantime,

There are two interrelated color systems. One is light and the other is pigment.
The colors of light are broken out into a spectrum with a prism. They are the colors of the rainbow. If you are in a place with no light, you see black or total darkness. In this case, you have an absence of light and color.
Pigment colors are seen when light is absorbed or reflected. A hypothetical pure red article would absorb all light rays and reflect the red rays. Black is seen when all light rays are absorbed. In this case, you have the presence of light around you, but the object is not reflecting light.
My opinion is in this second case, it is considered a distinct color as far as how we perceive it, but it is really a shade of extremely dark gray along the white-gray-black spectrum.

Black is a color. As mentioned Lacking hue and brightness; absorbing light without reflecting any of the rays composing it. The color at one extreme end of the scale of grays, opposite to white.

Black is the absence of light and white is the presence of light. So, when you want a color to be darker you subtract light by adding black and when you want it lighter or brighter, you add white -light-.
