Things like learning and the acquisition of knowledge. It refers to our need to learn and know and is higher up the hierarchy.

cognitive is the aquisition of knowledge through thought or perception, so therefore on maslows hierachy i would say it is the top one the need for self fulfilment, achievment, or justifying oneself to oneself.
