All for it. I honestly believe that there is so much to be dicovered that banning it will keep us in the dark ages. We are humans not lab rats, so cells from these animals just won't do the trick. I understand it is contriversial however, I think saving the lives or just the livelyhood of millions is worth it.
Embryonic stem cells can divide for a year or more in a laboratory without becoming specialized cells, while most adult stem cells can't. One stem cell can produce hundreds of genetically identical stem cells. Stem cell lines consist of cells that have been copied from one original stem cell.
Adult stem cells are also less flexible in giving rise to other types of cells. In most cases, an adult stem cell can only create cells that are found in the same part of the body from which the stem cell was taken. So an adult stem cell in the bone marrow can develop into a red blood cell, a blood platelet or a white blood cell, but generally not a skin cell or brain cell. However, research is discovering that adult stem cells may be more flexible than previously thought.
Embryonic stem cells come from human embryos created in a laboratory, usually through in-vitro fertilization. First, scientists inject sperm into the egg. A day after the egg is fertilized, it splits into a two-celled embryo. The next day, it splits into four cells, then into eight cells and so on.
By the fourth or fifth day after fertilization, the embryo has become a multi-celled ball called a blastocyst. At this point, the embryo is still tiny -- about the size of the dot on an "i." At this point, it can either be implanted into a woman's uterus, frozen for later use or used for research.
If the embryo is used for research, scientists remove the stem cells from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst, a process that destroys the embryo. The stem cells are cultivated in a lab and can multiply indefinitely. In this case it is never implanted in a uterus it is a lab created group of cells.
Think of the potential cures and/or treatments to allievate symptoms for:
Parkinson's disease
Alzheimer's disease
Heart disease
Type 1 diabetes
Blood cancers
Blood disorders
Spinal cord injuries
Stroke
Burns
Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Eye diseases
Hair loss
Also there is hope that embryonic stem cells may someday be used to produce cells or tissues to grow entire hearts, livers, kidneys or other organs, thus solving the problem of a shortage of organ donations.
As far as religion goes, I am a former Catholic now agnostic.

As a Chrisitan that recently became a father, I don't understand why so many people are against it. Stem cells aren't people. They're cells that have the potential to become parts of people, and we throw them away 99% of the time. If they can be used to cure diseases (which they are already used for) and to possibly fix things like paralysis, I don't see why using them is wrong. I only wish we would have had the funds available to bank my son's. There are plenty of instances where banked cord stem cells have cured cancer in young people. Sometimes people hear the word "cell" and they think embryo, and that is simply not the case here.

Is it worth killing someone Innocent for a chance for a cure someone else?
It is a very hard question. But I would like to say that I would rather die a slow and painful death than to have someone else die in my place. But as a christian, I choose life instead of death because someone has stood up to die in my place.
I guess the difference between the two is that in one Jesus choose to die for me, and for stem cell research, the baby did not choose to die and there is no guaranty that it will work.
So am I for or against it?
I am against it, but I am not your maker, so if you want to be for it then go ahead. but if I could ask a couple of things from you before you start.
I don't want to be involved in any way, Don't use my stem cells or any of my unborn children cells. Don't use my money "tax dollars" to fund your research.
Understand that I am not for it. And that I advised you to not do it as well. I don't want you telling god that I stood on your side, on this issue.

I am for it! if you believe in God, then you believe that God gave scientists the knowledge to research and find cures for fellow man.
Our mere existence is because of God's Blessings so any stem cell research is because of His Blessings too. The ultimate result would be cures for many illnesses we see in the world today.
However, when you have crooked politicians who are in bed with the big pharmaceutical corporations that don't want cures to illnesses because they would lose revenue, stem cell takes a back seat. Plus Dumb George likes to use the word N U C U L A R (not nuclear) because he most likely does not know the meaning of stem cell!!!
Guys ... guys...calm down...stem cell is not about killing fetuses and experimenting on unborn babies!! Ever heard of the placenta? Well, there have been a lot of research done on the placenta and they have come up with various findings for cures but the neocons do not want to invest in this type of research because their pharmacy buddies would lose revenues and they would not get their 'kickbacks'!!

I am not in favor of destroying a developed fetus which would actually have a chance of survival if removed from it mother's body. That's just common sense.
But stem cells. Yes. YES. *Y*E*S*. I am 100% in favor of stem cell research. And that's just common sense too.

I think even the Bible says that it's wrong to watch our fellow man suffer. But I don't believe in the Bible anyway. Why is it more moral to throw this matter away than to help someone with it? All that talk about God having a plan for you before you're born? what if it involves becoming an aborted fetus and saving a HUMAN life?

I am against aborted fetal stem cell research
It kills babies, but just as importantly it offers ABSOLULTLY NO cures or promise of cures at this point
I am FOR adult stem cell research
It has given us treatments and cures already with the promise of more to come
this is a no brainer.........unless you are a far left liberal or the equivilant............

This is an extremely thought provoking question. I believe it is essential. I guess I believe it should go forward regardless of my religion, just as I believe in birth control.

For if it's the only way.
Against if there's a different way.
If you can get stem cells from babies without killing them go ahead.
Life is life which should always be valued.
