Sadism and Masochism??
Okay, I am aware of the common theories pertaining to these odd traits, but I want to know a few people's personal opinions, as I am considering a personal theory at present. I just want YOUR personal opinion. Thank you.

I don't know how more clear I can be on this one.....Uh, yeah, I'm asking your opinion of S&M and what motivates such behavior, what kind of person does it, etc.; the question is actually pretty simple.
As for putting it in the Religion and Spirituality section, they can have more in common that one may think. Not to mention, the last time I posted this question in the Psychology section, only one person answered.

This is my personal opinion:
I can understand a little blindfolding, or light spanking in fun, but when it gets into pain, humiliation, and degrading of partners, it has become perverse, and self-centered. The entire act of S&M, is based on the core personality and desires of the INDIVIDUAL.
Marriage is not based on self-centered behavior and selifish thinking. Spouses are to share their love equally to encourage and strengthen each other. To degrade or hurt someone physically, mentally, or emotionally, simply to satisify personal taste, is unacceptable in my book, whether you are chistian or non-christian.
Wives are taught to be submissive, but this does not mean they are less important. In fact, the Bible describes a submissive woman as being very capable and strong in many areas. She is the one who helps her husband and children fullfill their roles, through her strength and love. Her submission is voluntary obedience to God's word, and any woman capable of filling that role well, can not be a timid wallflower. Submission does not mean weak!!
I'm not judging people who CHOOSE to participate in this lifestyle, but this IS my opinion on the PRACTICE of sadoism and masochism.
Anyway, I've heard many christians say the marriage bed is "undefiled". Which means, anything is acceptable if it does not involve fornication or compromise christian principles by participating in beastiality, homosexuality, and other sex acts specifically forbidden in the Bible. So there are christians who practice BDSM.
If you google christians and bdsm, quite a few websites come up. I even saw a yahoo group for married christians, called Christian D's or something like that.

My personal opinion is that it's just a fetish type of thing. I don't think there's anything wrong with it except for the ones who get into really heavy stuff which, I may sound prudish here, but some of it I find kind of offensive , like anything really extreme, scat, for example. Even though that's very rare, it has to be some kind of reversion to something from very young ages, being "stuck" in some way at some very very young age at something you eroticized at that age for some reason(s). The other more comon types of S/M are probably ways that people can vent otherwise socially unacceptable fantasies and desires in an acceptable mutually erotic situation. Why they have such fantasies or desires, whips, chains, masks, hot candle wax, clamps, all that other stuff, I have no idea, I'm no sexual therapist or psychiatrist, but, as long as they're not forcing anyone into anything then I say it's a green light. You only live once.

Theory for what - why people engage in S&M behaviour?
Sadism is the compliment of Masochism; you can't have one without the other. While S&M is linked with sex-play, it mostly revolves around the theme of power and who controlls it. A sadist is the one who is dominant and the masochist is the submissive party.
To bring back the question: Why do people engage in S&M? It revolves mostly around people's personalities. Some people have a need to control other people, some like to be controlled. This then translates into their sex lives and they engage in such acts with a partner who they absolutely trust. The pscyhology of it manifests as a demonstration of inner desires of power and as a sexual fetish.
... This question probably should have been posed in a different section.

It's usually termed Sado Masochism, and I think as long as it is practiced with the conesnt of both parties, and they agree safe words and limits etc, then it's fine! It's only non con stuff I have a problem with, especially when one of the party has no experience with such things.

It is a game for both people enjoying the scene. And very confusing who is in charge, because the top does mostly what the bottom wants, and the bottom gets to enjoy the attention.
It is different for all people but there in all people, just in varying degrees.
As long as it is a game and not non consensual there is nothing wrong with it.

Good question and thanks for making me go to Yahoo online dictionary. I did already learn that these two words do exist. Of course I was aware of the fact that such is in the world but I did not know the assigned name for such. See one can learn every day somethiong new right here. Thanks for the post.
OK OK my opinion or my view only. I see the source as the basic porential placed in all humankind by their creator [in my view] because of His perfect plan to place all in the state of without form and void status. Yousee I see all are placed in the darkness so they can recognize that light does exist. It is easier to see light if one is in the dark but if one is in the bright light another light may not be noticed.
In this status each may grow old and get nearer to the pending death change in this state and accumulate experiences that by nature tend to make each more and more to really know less and less [does that surprise you. I hope it does and I hope you think about it]
I say less and less, because I count all that one learns about this temporary world and the world system as only temporary and at death its gone in a view. That is I do accept the dead know nothing which to me means that If they go through this entire sequence and never get to know the one God Almighty or God Must High they learned nothing in this experience that is permanent except misery and discontentment. All that stuff they will keep along with the knowledge they did have the opportunity to know something but did refuse to do it.
Ok Ok no sermon for I don't do that. I am not out to change anyone.
I see in the two words the desire to cause harm or hurt to oneself or to others. It to me is likened to not accept a birth right to be made perfect if one will only desire such. I say it is a birth right for ones own coscience tells him that something is missing and when something is wrong for him. That feeling of discontent maybe be the driving force to want to change things by harm to self or harm to others. Do we not always look for contentment by nature? Is it not a fact to you that most of the time we don't find it because we are looking in the wrong place?
For me some look to power, money, easy or lazy life, and some to sex or whatever. However in my view it is not there. I did not find it until I accepted it was beyond my power and I just surrendered and gave up. I just accepted I was a peice of dust and that whoever did give me my life was the only one who could fix my life to find this contentment. If whoever could and would do this for me it could be done and if that whoever refused to do it, I could not change a thing.
Oh my friend I got it now. I am so content to just answer your question with a smile and enjoy this Q&A saying what I think and sharing what has happened to me.
I would guess that you should read some of the backgrounds of individuals who did display these two traits or are in these two classifications and I bet you will find some experiences they went through that did influence their developing into such. However I consider that as not the root. For me I just see that it is the rejection of by not accepting the pure truth that there is another in control of all and it is not within humankinds control to change anything except to surrender and ask that it be done for them and to them.. I see all knowledge and wisdom comes from the outside in and not the inside out until after one is given the potential inside for this to be sourced with. It is like we are born with one computer chip inside and it must be changed by another I we really want to get wisdom and knowledge. Some see that as a rebirth or born again from above.
Ok OK this is my opinion only and it OK for me. You must have your own and I will respect it for you no matter what you do decide. I respect your right to have your own views..
Now just have a great day and do find that contentment if you have not my friend. If you have Great.

Could you be more specific in your question? I have no idea what you're asking unless it's my opinion of the phenomenon. To which I say, to each their own. It doesn't have to work for me, I can still appreciate that others enjoy it. Like opera or impressionism.

you mean catholic school?
lol
actually one of my parents was abused and then abused us in various torturous means, blending god, law, citizenship and house chores with rewards of conditional love and punishments of pain and torture to mold you
the same person tortured herself with prayers of forgiveness that led me to believe god was into S&M
it was a self perpetuating cycle
