There are three different interpretations in the belief of the Abrahamic God. In my limited knowledge it's based on:
-Jewish: Following God's law
-Christian: Accepting Jesus as savior
-Muslim: Accepting God's transcendence and obedience.
These are three different sets of rules. To those with only a spectators interest, it would seem they are all the same, and they would all get along just fine. But when you get to the heart of the faith, they are incompatible.

Honestly, I think the shortest path to God is by disregarding religion. This forces you to seek the Divine within yourself rather than relying on other sources for your salvation.

Perhaps for people who believe in God. Not on a worldwide scale. However, a lot of people would have to give up beliefs that are central to their lives. This does not seem very likely.
