I don't think I'd do a registry, since those are traditionally reserved for weddings and new babies...but you could ask the birthday person what kinds of things he/she has been wanting...if it's little things, just make a list and distribute it to the party guests in advance so they can be shopping...if it's one big thing, maybe have the party guests pool their money together and get that item for the person. Also, I'm not sure what a money tree is (just a fake tree with money on it??), but if the person doesn't want any certain items, everyone could pool their money together and write one big check and put it in a nice card. The people of the church that my grandfather used to pastor did that for him once and it really was a nice surprise for him. :-) Hope this helps!

a money tree is a great idea but as far as the registry i dont see anything wrong with doing that at least that particular person will get things he/she needs and wants rather then stuff that will jsut be cast aside and put in storage. you can always do both too or maybe they want to take a trip somewhere special just a few more ideas for my mother on her surprise 50th we had a get together with all the people she cares about and gave her a plaque from us children with a little poem about how good she was to us and how much we appreciated her. things like that are good too because it something sentimental but yeah sorry a registry is a great idea along with the money tree so wahtever one you wnat to do. good luck and have fun!

I would definitely do a registry, it might be hard though, seeing as it's a surprise party, unless you know exactly what he or she wants. I know, from experience, that when going to a party I'd much rather know what the person wants, rather than taking a stab in the dark and end up giving them something they don't like or will never use. Cash is also fail safe, but some people don't feel comfortable giving cash, they see it as less personable, so make sure there are options other than cash... Good Luck!

I would say no on the registry or money tree for any birthday party. Far more meaningful of a 'gift' would be to ask that each guest write down a favorite memory/experience with the birthday person on a paper leaf and make a memory tree.

I've given to a money tree. No big deal.
Is the party going to be so big that you need a registry?
I would sign one, if there were one to sign.

No no no.
Tacky.
At 50, most people ask that they do NOT recieve gifts.
