Okay, I am not a super religous person, but let's think of this as a catholic, which I am not. The chalice is filled with red wine. I have done catering for a local catholic pastor/priest/father, and the wine is ever flowing. When offered a glass, I would ask for a beer instead, and they never had a time that the frig didn't have a couple available. These "parties" were attended by other priests from all over the US. So if it is a sin, then it is being done by those closest to the source. Of course misusing alcohol is looked upon differently by both church and society.

1. Getting drunk is a sin.
Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

2. Drinking without getting drunk is not a sin.
1 Corinthians 6:12 “Everything is permissible for me”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”—but I will not be mastered by anything.

Is drinking alcohol beneficial to you?

1 Corinthians 8:9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

The Bible strongly condemns alcohol abuse.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

Proverbs 23:20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat,

Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Dr. Anderson Spickard Jr. of Vanderbilt University Medical Center outlines the biblical stance on alcohol abuse: “Alcohol abuse, even that which may not lead to serious consequences, is addressed very pointedly in scriptures. Both Jesus and Paul warn us repeatedly that drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Luke 21:34, 1 Cor. 6:10, Gal. 5:21)
It’s not hard to figure out why they speak so strongly: alcohol abuse is involved in most murders, most assaults, most child abuse cases, most traffic fatalities—the list is endless. We do ourselves and our society a great disservice when we laugh at drunkenness or treat it lightly.”

1 Thessalonians 5:4 8 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.

I'm not sure. I've never seen drinking alcohol referred to as a sin in The Bible. What is mentioned is that drunkenness is a sin. The first time wine and drunkenness is referred to is after the flood, when Noah planted a vineyard , and drank and became drunk.

Not at all Jesus said so Himself...
Matt.11:18-19
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

If our Lord drank then why would anyone say that it is wrong. All this isn't just for the table of communion it is there for the joy of man as well. Now drunkenness is a whole different ball game.. Do we need to go there or can you agree that it is just wrong?... Jim

I've always struggled with this, for the Scripture says something to the effect that "a little wine is good for the infiormities of the stomach". Yet, there are several instances where God is very displeased with people being "overserved" and drunk! Jesus drank wine himself and it's an established symbolism for purity! So, my best guess is that it's ok as long as you're not drunk in social situations or church and etc.......

drinking alcohol is not a sin, But getting drunk my lead to sin.

So if you truly want to make sure that you don't sin, then you will stay away from the things that may lead you to sin.
But if you have enough self control there is nothing wrong with drinking.

Its like a cliff, its really cool to look down from a cliff. As long as you don't fall.

The Bible says not to be drunk with wine, it does not say that we should not drink wine.

I don't drink alcohol for personal reasons, and also not to be a stumbling block to someone else. However, it is a matter of personal choice.

I work with addicts who are seeking to recover and am fully aware of the issues related to alcohol misuse. I also have two members of my family who struggle with alcoholism, and it effects not just them personally, but others around them too.

According to Canon Law, the consumption of alcohol is not a sin. Drinking in excess may be considered a 'vice' but not a sin.

Catholisism and Christianity has always embraced the consumption of alcohol both symbolocally and spiritually.
