I have a very dear friend of mine who raised a daugher on his own. She's thirty now and she's pregnant. She's asked me what did labor pains feel like and how to deal with them. I couldn't help her because 20 years ago when I had my baby, I didn't have any labor pains.

So women who've had this experience, how can she deal with them?

Great question. Every woman feels it differnely and differently. Tell her to check out www.babycenter.com which has tons of info.

Personally, I decided to do "hypnobirthing" when we had our daughter 5 years ago. I really thought that I could do it without medication, but due to the way my body handled labor, I was in labor for 26 hours, and I had "back labor" where all the pain was in my back rather than in the front. The "hypnobirthing" didn't work, and after 17 hours, I got an epidural, which was a fantastic decision. The meds kicked in fast, and I had no trouble pushing.

I thought it was amazing, and enjoyed the last hours of my labor since they were pain free.

Some people do great with no meds. I was not one of them. Whatever she decides, I know she will be fine.

Wish her the best of luck for me...

So long as you don't freak out your okay the best thing to do is try to go as long as you can before you go to the hospital, because once you get there they like to keep you in the bed. That is when the pain really begins to bother you if you do need medicine my advice is to get it through your IV, not the epidural everyone that I know who has had one has back aches years later from them. I had five of my kids with just one shot of Demerol and my six child was with nothing at all she was the forth child and she was 7 1/2 lbs. It's not that hard if you have a good coach to help you when you need the help. good luck and enjoy it only last a short while then you don't even remember it.

You deal with it because you have to. There's no secret to lessening labor pains. After a while, they'll give some painkillers. Other than that, learning the breathing rhythm really does help. Sounds stupid at first but helps you concentrate on something else. Think of the end result.
