To norsmen

Hi there, I am 51 years old have Osteo Arthritis in both my hips and have bone spurs in the middle of my spine. I also have rotational scoliosis too (lower spine)
Like you my world is falling apart. My mobility sux bad and has gotten progressively worse in the past 4 years. Was talking last night about how well I was when I was in Wyoming (Evanston) I could get around well, did a lot of walking in the Unitas, climbing and hiking. But now back in the UK with my American husband my world is falling apart and some days I can barely get out of bed. What treatments are you on (pain relief and anti-inflammatory) Plus have you ever tried any complimentary/natural Meds for your condition?

Rheumatoid can come on very quickly but it is possible to get over it in time. Osteo is gradual deterioration for which the only remedy is joint replacement.

Some people find that a change of diet and use of some creams and painkillers helps. It is also better not to be overweight as that puts extra strain on the knee and hip joints.

I am 60 years old and have Osteo Arthritis in my back hands and Knees. I wear a brace on both Knees I can no longer do the things that I have loved to do hunt, fish, etc. I was a machinist/machine builder for 35 years a job I loved and was good it. In my prime I was making $22.00 per hr. to day I am lucky To be able to hold a welding torch and make $11. With in two years I will no longer be able to work. I am still to young to retire and the savings are going to the Dr.s and drug Co. Arthritis of any kind is no fun.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long term disease which is caused when the immune system attacks the human body. Osteoarthritis is caused when the layer of cartilage that covers the end of the bones gets worn out due to use or because of injury and bone spurs are formed. I have neck and back problems, sciatica (the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and is pinched in those with sciatica usually from a herniated or bulging disc) and fibromyalgia (chronic diffuse pain and fatigue), and I take glucosamine and chondroiton capsules. They are not approved by the FDA (food and drug adminstration) but dr's do recommend it (found over the counter/otc) as it's supposed to help with the joints and cartilage. It does help me with pain a bit and I use The Vitamin Shoppe's brand that also has bromelain (substance found in pineapples) which can also help with digestion and quercertin which is found in apples and is an antioxident too. Perhaps you can ask your doctor about those types of supplements. Physical activity is also recommended to keep the bones, joints and spine as flexible as possible. A personal trainer may be able to show you a safe way of stretching and exercising. Great that you are thinking so far in advance as preventative medicine :)
