There are lots of illness' associated w/too much H2O intake. First thing you need to do is measure out the water and keep track of it so you may let the vet know that your dog is drinking this much water in this amount of time. It is always best to have him checked out to be sure and safe. Be careful of what advice you get from Yahoo.

Could be that he/she is just very very thirsty. My old labrador has always had an obsession with drinking. He'll drink and drink til his stomach is full, be sick, and if there is more water on offer, he'll keep drinking. He's been tested for diabetes and other things but there's nowt wrong with him.
If your dog has just started doing it, you might want to get it tested for diabetes. Or it could just be the hot weather. And if it's none of those things, just accept that your dog has a drink problem like mine!!!

First thing a vet would check is for diabetes. If a dog is fed kibble (dry food) it will drink much more water than if fed tin or fresh food

One thing it means is that he's thirsty but seriously, I'd bring him to a vet; it may be signs that he's missing out on some nutrients his body needs.

It could be, but it's normally when they stop drinking or eating when you have to be concerned.

If in doubt, take your dog to the vet anyway!
