She is bleeding. Is this normal? I have had a female dog before and she did not bleed!! But not only is one doing it, but my other dog is doing it also. They are totally different ages!! Would one dog in heat put another into heat as well? What is going on!!
My biggest concern is that they are inside dogs and I hate to leave them out all night. We live in utah, and it has been 30 deg. here at night the past couple nights.

Q1: do dogs always bleed?
Q2: can one dog cause another to go into heat also?
Q3: will they always bleed?
Q4: how often does this happen?
Q5: what can i do?

In answer to your question, yes they do bleed during the first week to ten days. The heat cycle then goes into a straw color with the female swelling quite a bit. This is when she can be bred. If you have another female dog that is not spayed they can cycle together.
The heat cycle is usually about 6 months apart
and if you don't want to go through this and have unwanted puppies, please have your female dogs spayed. You can go to a pet store in your area and pick up panties that have a little pad to put on your dogs, this will
help control the mess in your house and on your furniture. If your dogs are not spayed you can look forward to this happening again in about six months. Please keep your females away from the male dogs, this heat cycle last for twenty one days.

Q1. Not always.I had a dog that had dry heats. Even if that is the case, the dog still has a heat and can get pregnant.
But most dogs do have a week-10 days of their heat cycle where they bleed.
Q2. I am not sure, but it could just be time for both of them.
Q3. Not always. They will only bleed during that particular time of their cycle.
Q4. Dogs come into heat approximately once every 6 months. However, every 5-7 months is not uncommon either.
Q5. The only thing you can do is make sure there are no male dogs around. You can keep the dogs crated during the actual bleeding if you don't want a mess around the house. There are also doggy sanitary diapers you can try. Have the dogs spayed to avoid this in the future.
Their are 3 weeks to their cycle, but the bleeding typically only lasts for 7-10 days.

HI! Yes they DO bleed when they are in heat...2-3 WEEKS!
It is possible, when my golden retireiver would go in heat so would our pitt, and it is better that way cause they are both getting it out of the way. It will be bad bleeding for the first 2 weeks,do you have a room that has linolium in it? That's what I do (just use an old mop to clean up the floor, and leaving them outside during the day should be fine),and keep ALL male dogs AWAY! Unless you want to breed, you do that around the 2-3rd week (the end)
This WILL happen EVERY 6 MONTHS...UNLESS you get them fixed. Hope this helps!! Also if you do breed you would have puppies around Thanksgiving time (christmas gifts!!) Good luck!

#1-Do they ALWAYS bleed?
Most females do bleed when in heat. A heat cycle lasts 21 days. For the first week there is genital swelling, followed by light pink bleeding and then heavy darker bleeding. By day 10 the bleeding is a lighter amber color (ice tea color or rusty color) and this is the point at which she could get pregnant. If she is bleeding heavily now she is probably at day 7 or so and you should keep her ( and your other dog) INSIDE. They will get pregnant. Watch you females' behavior closely. She will tell you when she can get pregnant. Females that are ready are very, well, HORNY. Some will even back up to their owners! Watch for "flagging" this is where, when the back is touched some females will stiften up, hold their butt out, flex their vulva (make their private "wink") and put the tail to one side. Watch your girls, they will run away to get pregnant and could even fight with each other during their heat!
#2- Can one fem cause another to bleed?
I have heard of this, it is possible. Most females simply cycle through their heats every 6 months. The first heat is at 6 months of age and they cycle on from that point.
#3- Do they always bleed?
Yes, they will always bleed during a heat ( or at least they should ). They sell feminine products at pet and feed stores for this. They are little panties that have disposible pads in them just like a maxi for a woman.
#4-
How Often?
GENERALLY- The first heat cycle is at 6 months of age. LARGE breeds however can take until 8-12 months to cycle.
Most females continue to cycle for almost 3/4 of their life, average is 6-7 years and they cycle every 6 months. Smaller breeds and false pregnancies can cause females to cycle as early as every 4 months. Large breeds can be a little as every 8 months to once a year. But GENERALLY-every 6 months.
#5- WHAT can you do?
Welll, you can protect your ladies from gentleman callers ( AND YOU WILL HAVE TONS OF THEM with two females cycling ) by keeping them in the house. You can get them the pads to protect your carpet and household. And then, you can get them spayed it will prevent all of this from ever happening again.
You can spay them now ( it will cost more and be more risky ) or you can cross your fingers and protect them for the next 2 weeks and then get them SPAYED ASAP. Hopefully you do not want puppies, raising dogs is a lot of work.
Take care, good luck and I really, really hope this helps!

#1 - yes, this is called "spotting" and can last 10-15 days. After the spotting stops, you will see the vulva "winking" (pulsing). You will also see that they will hold their tail to the side a good bit. This is called "standing heat" as in "standing to be bred" and is the fertile time. Make sure you keep a close eye on them. This lasts for about 2 weeks. They are most fertile from the 3-9th day of standing heat but can reproduce up to 14 days or so.

#2 - I have 3 intact females, and yes, one will go into heat, when spotting stops and they go into standing heat, the next will start spotting and so forth. So, twice per year, I have all the girls in one room and the boys in the other.

#3 - for as long as they are intact, then yes, every 6-8months, on average, you will go through this again. If you are not interested in being a responsible breeder, and all the testing and studying, etc that go with it, it is easier and healthier to go ahead and have them spayed when the heat is over.

#4 - on average, every 6-8 months, though I know of some dogs that only have a heat once per year. That is pretty rare. My girls averate around 7 - 71/2 months.

#5 - during heat, keep her confined to the house and only let her out on a leash or in a fenced area and then only supervised. A male can smell a female in heat up to 5 miles away. Any male dogs in the area, (including wolves, etc) will come running. When there is a female in heat (and in your case you have it double) they will do amazing things to get to them including climbing fences, digging under them, and I have even heard (but have not seen) a male dog mate a female THROUGH a chain link fence.

Good luck

To your first question it is yes they all bleed to some degree's. And its said that when together they can ghange and have their cycle at simular/same time but not always true. Not when they get old enough it will stop. They go into heat about twice a year on average. like my rott goes into heat every fall in september and then again in april in the spring. Nothing, they usually clean up after themselves so no mess but also the make diapers or pads for this purpose. You could talk to the perople at the pet store or your vet. Watch letting them outside make sure thay are fixed or you could have some babies on the way. especially if not in a very secure area from other loose dogs ect.

Yes this is normal, just like people (of course not as much). Some dogs bleed alot and some dogs barley bleed at all. The pheramones and hormones regulate heat cycles so it is possible that your other dog is getting on the other dogs schedule. Don't panic its totally natural.

Two options:

1. you can spay your dogs, esp. if you don't plan on breeding them or they are not of breeding quality (confirmation, physical/mental status, and gentic problem free). Spaying with prevent many cansers, oviarian, uterine and mamary canser (can't get cancer in them if you don't have it. Spaying also prevent a life threating condition called pyometra (which is a fowl smelling uterine infection). You will never have another heat again or have to worry about unwelcomed male dogs who can usually get overrly aggressive with who ever trys to get in their way.

2. You can also look in to purchasing some doggie bloomers. They are now more advanced, with linners too. Its like underwear ment just for girly dogs on that time of the season.

I wish you good luck and don't panic this is very normal.

Panic if the discharge is yellowish green, with a fowl smell, and your dog is feeling ill with a temperature. These are usually the signs of pyometria, and this infection will kill your dog. If you notice anything like this rush her to the vet ASAP. Her life is on the line.

1.Yes it is normal
2.I do not know... but it the time of year for a female to go into "season"
3.No the bleeding will stop right before they are most fertile
4. about twice a year
5. If you do not want puppies (which I suggest do not breed your dogs. too many animals die in shelters as it is) then you should spay them.

dogs usually bleed. the amount can vary greatly.
more than one female can cause all female to cycle.
they rarely do not bleed as that is how you know they are in season.
it can happen more than once a year. it can vary with the dog just like with humans as not all cycle the same.
it won't last long. they sell doggy sanitary pants at pet stores if you want to go that route.
