Theism is simply a classification that includes a belief in a God or Gods. It can be mono or poly and by definition does include Christians, Muslims, Jews, as you asked. But, belonging to an organized religion is not a requirement for this classification. I am glad I read ahead, some folks are mistaken in thinking that theism means deism. Deists are also included in the category of a theist since they do believe in a higher power, but the two are not mutually exclusive.

You can be a theist but not belong to a religion. Atheists dont believe in higher beings but theists do. I guess the bigger question is are agnostics considered theists?

Someone who believes in god and has no religion is just simply non denominational. You believe there is higher power out there you just don't associate yourself with organized religion. An atheist per definition is someone who does not believe in a higher power or associate themselves with organized religion. I have heard of some Atheist sects.

Theist means "god believer", so not, a religion is not required.

Religion doesn't have a name to it; it's really a man search for God. You can take anything and make it a religion. What you need to have
is a relationship.

"SPLATT" has it right, such a person is termed a deist.

If you read the writings and personal letters of all the signers of the US's "Declaration of Independence", all 17 of them were deists.
