Hello Mam:
For that kind of fishing I would suggest that you go to Wal-Mart and visit their sporting goods department. It is not necessary for you to spend as much as the $ 500 you mentioned . You should be able to purchase a good medium length rod and quality spinning reel for less than $100 easy. A medium length rod is fine for that type of fishing from the dock, river bank, etc. If your husband goes out in a boat often, he will also want to have a short rod which is much easier to handle inside a boat. So you might want to consider two rods with reels.
I use a 7 foot medium weight rod with a large spool spinning reel for dock fishing and along creek banks, etc. For fishing from a boat I back up to about a 5 1/2 or 6 foot medium weight rod (same kind of reel).
Ocean fishing in deep water is a whole separate deal and can be very expensive. You did not mention Tuna, or Swordfish. So, I don't think your mate is a salt water man.
Wal-Mart had some excellent buys about three months ago and I bought two new setups to add to my collection for about $40 each.
Buy him a really neat fishing hat to go with the rods. He will love it. Try one of those canvas colored, Aussie looking, jobs with the neck lanyard (so the wind doesn't blow it off).
Cheers,
Zah

It depends your price range. You can get a nice Mitchell for like 40 bucks at wlamart and a cheap rod, cause that doesn't matter to much as a beginner. By far the best option is a Shakespeare combo from Walmart, about 20-30 bucks. By him some fake worms and some spinner baits, and he'll find out the rest. Good luck And definetly don't get a baitcasting reel or a closed raced reel like a Zebco. Don't listen to those people that say they are easy. Your huband is 27, those reels are meant for 4 year olds. Good luck.

Buy a nice casting rod/reel. Reel should have ball bearings and also be a reel type not a spinner. Bait Casting reel is the terminology. Unfortunately I haven't bought one in forever so I am not up on the brands and models. A nice 6 or 7 foot long rod will do the trick. Preferably a graphite composite rod. They are very light and strong. Put most of your money in the reel though. Most any good rod will do.

Go to a sporting goods store.Or a fishing tackle store.Stay out of Wal Mart and stores like that. The people there will have a great deal more knowledge. You might pay a little bit more, but they are very familiar w/ the particulars of the area you live in., and they handle quality products. What you've described will likely require more than one set up,so take their advice.A quality rod and reel will last for the rest of his life if you buy quality.Good Luck!!!

my boyfriend is a fishing maniac! he is always searching ebay. the good thing about ebay is that you can ask sellers all types of questions and they answer. most people selling rods and fishing materials, know a little about fishing. if you don't know much about fishing, its going to be hard to find the right stuff, ask a lot of questions- good luck!
