Women, please explain this monopoly you have over these and similar words.

Hey free_your_fancy-

Sugarbabe, I didn't generalize in my question. If you read the question, honey, you'll see that I said "so many" women. That's hardly a generalization, babe.

What an awesome question!

It actually comes down to the woman feeling condescended to and hit on. When a woman uses those terms, in most cases (as we all desperately try not to generalize), it's a term of endearment, affection, even motherly-type feeling. We associate it with kind words, maybe the South (how many Yankees call each other 'shug'), and a close bond. Women don't have that bond with men they don't know.

When men do it, unless it's a boyfriend, husband, or relative, it's condescending or even threatening. For instance, a few months ago I left my wallet in a casino. I had to go to all the assistance desks and there was this one old creepy man who was so nasty and mean about it, but you wouldn't know it because he kept saying "Well honey, let's have a look at this big old record book. Ok, darling? We'll just take a peek right in here for your little wallet..."

Totally unacceptable. We don't want to feel like little kids you need to help out or hit on.

That's my take. Good question, like I said!

Well i only let my husband and some friends call me honey or hun i will not let someon else that i really dont know do it. Some men use those words to get womens attention and women do not like that. Some women prefer to be only be called by there names by their spoces or significant other or friends. It just really depends on the woman and what she likes.

All depends on the context and intent, sugar. Also, sweety, try not to generalize. Not all women do the double-standard thing, honey.

Sorry, sugarbum, but until you say specifically which women you're talking about, it's all generalization.

In any case -- the answer is as I've stated -- CONTEXT and INTENT.

well u girls use it u can use it in a million ways in which it really doesn't mean the one you love and can mean a dear or close friend coz v girlz use sweet words for almost everyone whereas boys don't use such words and are hesitant in being as sweet as girlz and when they speak these words they mean that they love that person . thats y . simple.
example : girls often say' y honey didn't u know that 'to soo many people this doesn't mean they love them all.

I hate being called "honey" or "darling" by anyone other than close family and friends. Man or woman, I find it creepy for people to use these terms loosely. It's tacky.

I call my bf honey all the time. And he calls me honey right back. There is nothing offensive about that.

However, if a stranger (regardless of gender) calls me honey, I don't appreciate it.

I personally would never take offense to someone calling me honey... or darling... I mean... Cmon... thats pretty petty.

I think only some women feel that way.... not all of us take offense, quite honestly i love it when men do it, it shows they have a romantic side......

Only my husband gets that distinction. It's inappropriate otherwise.
