I just have to add some stuff to clear a few peoples minds that answered the question... The furnace is in the dining room barely any furniture to block it, the house is rented, a baby gate won't block the room because there is no hallway to it, you can't just throw pillows or carpet on it because it will catch fire and I do not believe in letting him just touch it or kicking him in the shin and I think it was very rude of you unmentionable people that said that for a couple points it's sick.... and baby's move fast he could be on it within minutes so I can't just watch him and finally I'm really worried about because when my mom was six she fell on a floor furnace and got really bad burns and you can still see them today they look like grill marks so obviously you can't just let them touch it
So , thanks to the people that put real answers to my question on here and shame on the others.

You should be able to find a guard to go around the furnance. We had to buy one with our first child. Didn't find it at a large chain store. Found it at a hole in the wall local place. I would imagine that someplace like Lowe's or Home Depot could get you one though.

I just read throught the answers and everyone is pretty much running with the same train of thought I was with the baby gate. You will want to use extra hardware (hinges, etc. ) to make it sturdy enough the baby doesn't knock it over. Be sure that the gate or whatever you decide to use cannot pinch or choke your child. It is amazing where they can get their fingers or heads. You could possibly set some large heavy planters on the floor in front to 'decorate' but again use caution...some vegetation is poisonous. Next, distract your little one's attention from this area by setting up another area with things your little one enjoys. When looking for your gate, remember the tall privacy screens that can be so pretty,,,also the screens that are made specifically for fireplaces. Ask at the store or call your fire department to find out the distance away from your furnace things should be placed. And do follow that advice. You are talking to trained people.

Today they have garden gates that are use poles into the ground rather than fence or gate posts. They also have the gate that opens which is smaller than the sides. They are about 3 feet high and 36 inches long. The part that opens are 3 feet high and very from 15 to 17 inches wide. They have them at lowes and home depot in the garden section. You can either drill a hole in the floor and assemble the posts through the gate around the heater. Or, go to the plumbing section. They have galvanized flanges and pipe. You still have to drill the flange into the floor and be able to slide the fence posts into the galvanized pipe. This part I have not figured out yet, I need an adapter that will connect at 3/4 inch opening down to the size of the fence hole. Thats why I am just going to drill a hole into the ground. When you see the gates, this post will make sense. I couldnt upload photos

There are alot of creative things you can do with the floor furnaces. what we did was go to home depot or lowes or a hardware store that has sheets of corragated tin essentially you will be making a decorstive screen with 3 sheets of tin and 4 door hinges, you may also use a thin wood u can even buy, now, wooden boxes to fit over the furnaces. if you have grates in the floor you can buy sheets of magnets take a drill and punch holes in the sheet to let the heat come out and then stick them to the grates. ok let me know if you need more ideas

You MUST go and purchase a gate to put across the area that this floor furnace grate is.
When my son was a baby, he had just learned how to walk. I was at a friends home and did not realize that she had a floor furnace, thank god it wasn't on because he fell on it straight away, and it could have been a disaster.
Please go and get some safety gates to install......

It will be expensive but well worth it considering what could happen...
Buy a baby pen thing like they have on Rugrats...Put it up around the furnace...If it will keep a baby in it will keep a baby out..Trust me...Or you could keep the baby out of the room where the furnace is...
