probably just as easy to leave him home have a friend or neighbor go and check on him once a day to give him food, fresh water, and clean out the litter box and play with him.

That depends on kitty.
How is he on short rides? If he's OK with short trips, like to the vet, then he'll probably be OK on a longer ride.
Even if he's not crazy about the car, at five months he's probably not old enough to be set in his ways. This might be a great opportunity to get kitty used to riding in the car, and you might have a cool road buddy for the rest of his life.
Make sure kitty has some food, water and a litter pan in the car. Be sure to keep a window cracked or the vents open for plenty of fresh air, and if you keep him in a carrier, arrange it so kitty can see out.

Leave him home. It will be much less stressful for your cat. Have a few good friends he's met before come check on him twice a day while you're gone. Make sure your friends feed him, give him fresh water and change the litter box. And of course spend at least an hour petting him and playing with him!!!!
Have a nice trip!

Well my cat would not stay in a car that long (she is 19 tho!!) When we went away to Miami earlier this month for Labor day (3 1/2 day's) we left her home alone with a fresh clean cat litter box, plenty of water (her water dish you can put a 2litter of water into and it self dispenses) and she was fine, yes we did worry about her but cat's take care of themselves they have been for centuries now,and when you get home your little kitten will meow and be so happy you are home! Or you can take your cat to a kennel...scope it out FIRST! Kennels can be cheap (around $10 aday) Good luck & have fun!!

Personally, I'd recommend taking him. If you have time beforehand, take him on some short trips to get him used to the car & carrier. The carrier should be padded, as another recommended with toys from home and a favorite blanket, if he has one.
Get him a little harness; if possible get him used to this before your trip. And a leash. Because...
About 1/2 way through your trip you may want to stop, take him out of the carrier & allow him food, water & use of the litter box (all of which he may or may not use). The harness leash will ensure his safety in case he tries to bolt. Last thing you want to do is lose him!
He's young, and can be taught that trips are fun! :-)

I don't think the cat would enjoy the car trip. Cats don't like to ride anyway...He will probably be more comfortable at home as long as u leave him enough food and water..and make sure to clean the liter box out good before you go...(if he is an inside cat)

If you take him he must be harness and leashed at all times and you must be extra vigilant that he doesn't get away from you as running free with a leash attached could be dangerous for him.
He CANNOT be left alone. You must have a "cat sitter" to check on him daily, feed him, empty his box and give him some play time and affection. Hire a professional or have a trusted neighbor or friend who loves cats do this for you.
Sometimes people who work in vet offices provide this service for extra cash so check with your vet. Vet offices frequently let professional animal and housesitters leave their cards in the vet's office. Check out a few of these.

You could actually choose whichever option both you and the cat would prefer. He'll be okie by himself so long as he's kept within the safety of home with no dangerous things for him to play with (e.g. open toilet bowls, dangling cords). However it would be highly advisable to get a friend or relative to check on him every now and then so that you'll have a peace of mind knowing that kitty's safe and comfortable at home, with his needs being taken care of. Better still, perhaps your vet would be in a better position to advice you. :)
Have a safe journey too!
