I have been trying to train hard with a rigorous weight training and cardio workout - whenever I even marginally overtrain, I suffer from insomnia, and my muscles feel soft and useless the next day. Any theories on why? Would more protein/vitamins help?

Theres a word for that and it starts with an S and ends with ING.
Maybe you're not eating enough and drinking enough to compensate for the loss of calories and fluids. Also try putting salt in your water and food.

How close to bedtime are you training? Exercise releases endorphins which would keep you from sleeping.

Your muscles feel soft and useless the next day because there is a buildup of an acid which is a byproduct of the sugars your muscles burn when you use them. Only time dissipates that which is why you shouldn't work the same group of muscles every day but alternate.

Better than taking protein or vitamins in pill or powder form is eating correctly and getting enough rest.

I know when you train a chemical gets release in your brain, it's a hormonal thing.
