As a Brit I have to say that it seems Americans are still much more into God and church going that we British are.
I don't know many devout church goers or people who strongly see themselves as Christian.
I was baptised so if you asked me what my religion was I guess I'd say Christianity (after I'm I'm not a Hindu, Muslim or Buddhist!) but thats about as far as it goes. I don't really pray or go to church. Bring Christian is just part of my culture, the same way we have our babies baptised and get married in churches and have funeral services, even if those are the only 3 times we go in a church in our lives!!!

It is true at least for the scandinavian countries, the enlightened world, as we have understood that you dont need to be a good person just because you go to church. You can still believe in something but without being overly religious and anal about it. Life moves on and so does the people with it. Education to all religions in the world is key to understanding and accepting one another, not the religions in themselves.

Traditional Christianity is declining rapidly along with overall church attendance. The "new churches" are growing but not wuite as rapidly, thus religious adherence overall is declining. However, outside of Europe, in South America for instance, which traditional Christianity is declining, in many places the New Churches are iehter keeping pace or outstripping the decline, thus adherence is either stable or growing.
Some believe that it is possible for this to happen in Europe too and predict that it is likely to happen in the future.

Religion used to be the theme of nearly every peasant's life in early modern Europe (pre-industrial age), and if was often used to control the masses. Currently, religion is less of a birth-right and more of default sort of activity, passed on from parent to children.

After WWII religion any kind is dead in Europe. The carnage of war has given people there a much more cosmopolitan out look. I can't blame them after hundreds of religious war and a close call with total destruction.

I am sorry to hear that. Don't give up just yet. Give yourself a moment to think. Is it the people preaching at you that disturb you or is it God? Way too many people give up on religion because they get the word thrown in their face all the time. You might want to try to avoid this people but don't throw away God because of them. God is here for you. Your relationship is personal and private. Peace to you.

Yes, I can't help feeling it is a step forward considering the kind of Christianity you're talking about.
