I'm looking for freeware (not shareware) that can handle the splitting of movie files on my computer. At a minimum it must be able to handle AVI files and MPEG files. Any suggestions?

MEncoder is a free command line video decoding, encoding and filtering tool released under the GNU General Public License. It is a close sibling to MPlayer and can convert all the formats that MPlayer understands into a variety of compressed and uncompressed formats using different codecs.

It's command line only right now, so it might be tricky to use if you're not familiar with a command prompt.

To split a video into smaller playable videos, use this command at the command prompt:
"mencoder -ovc copy -oac copy -ss 0 -endpos 700mb -o movie_part1.avi movie.avi"

The above example will split a movie into 700mb pieces so that you can burn these pieces onto a CD (for example).

and to join multiple videos, use this:
"mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -idx -o whole.avi part1.avi part2.avi ..."
(This will only work if the video contained in the files have the same resolution and use the same codec.) This will work for both MPG and AVI files.

Try File Splitter ver 1.1 built 18082002 by ZERO COOL ,it is freeware & its availabe on www.softpedia.com.
After splitting the file into desired parts u just have to change the file extension & its done.Eg: when u split the file its extension becomes .000 just change it to .VOB ,.AVI or any other format that u want .
