It's believed to be part of the end times scenario - chain of events. It's derived from the name of an ancient north-Palestinian town called "Megiddo"; an evolving belief which traces its roots back to 609 BC, when the Hebrew king "Josiah" was killed there in a battle against the Egyptians.
How likely its future occurrence is, is yet to be seen, but it's obviously clear that fundamentalist Western Christians are doing their best to see it happen, for its happening must follow and be followed by all other events expected to mark the end of days.

Armageddon refers generally to end times or giant, apocalyptic catastrophes in various religions and cultures. It may also refer to any great loss of life in battle or use of weapons of mass destruction.
The word Armageddon is thought to be derived from the Hebrew words Har Megido (הר מגידו), meaning "Hill of Megiddo". The referred site is a valley plain called Megiddo, which was the location of many decisive battles in ancient times (Battle of Megiddo).

The battle of Armageddon will be at the end of the 7 year tribulation period. It won't be the end of times. Then comes the 1000 year reign of Christ.

"And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great."

Armageddon is the final battle of the Great Tribulation. It is the place that the Bible identifies, a valley, where the battle will be fought.
