Argos have a extend-able child's gate that can adjust to over 1m width. Its very cheap as well. We have a awkward position on our stairs so we got this as it goes right across the landing.

If your stairs are in a hallway, rather than in your front room, you could try putting a gate on the entrance to the hallway so that baby can't get near the stairs.
At the top, you could try putting the gate back from the stairs, where there is a bit of wall, if you have the same problem.
You can get some gates which are actually a piece of material that you pull out from one side so if you have a wide hall this may be better than a standard swing gate.

I need to fit some sort of stair gate, but don't have a bannister, can anyone recommend something similar until the chippy comes to fit it?

I removed them somewhere around 3 years old. You could move the gate at the bottom of the stairs to 3, 5 or 6 steps up. That way you can give him room to practice navigating the stairs without the chance of falling down the whole flight. Once he appears to be doing well, by being cautious and careful, and doesn't fall then I would think he's ready.

I had a similar problem when my 2nd child came along but guess what- I never fitted a stair gate! I had one in a 1st floor flat for 1st baby, but in my house I never had a problem keeping my kids away from the stairs, so it depends on the layout of your house. due to the shape of my landing, I can't have a gate at the top either, and by the way, a gate doesn't necessarily stop them falling down the stairs. Just keep the doors closed!

if its the sorta stairgate im thinking of, you can get the ones that fit on the bottom step inbetween the walls of the stairs, and you just screw a small fitting on each side until its tight... no need for a bannister then....on the link below, hav a look at the two pics that are the same about halfway down on the right...i couldnt get a proper image because the link does not exist anymore.

Just put something in the way so he can't get to the stairs, may be a fire guard would work. I had to put fire guards round my plants because my son kept eating them and the soil!!

Try http://www.onestepahead.com. I buy a lot of items from them for toddlers. They sell all kinds of safety products and developmental toys. I love the site and you can request a catalog to order by mail. Good luck you'll be amazed at what they have to offer.
