maybe broken??? keep your hand elevated (above the level of your heart) to reduce swelling. Tylenol or aspirin.. or any pain reliever you normally take.

There are a couple of options:

1) Take an anti-inflammatory. Ibuprophen (Advil) or Naproxen-Sodium (Aleve) are 2 of the best Over The Counter solutions.

2) Do to the Doctor and have it 'drained' ... the doctor puts a small hole in the nail to release the fluids that are building underneath the nail... thus releasing the pressure.

Do NOT try to do this on your own... IF the injury gets infected from making the hole, it can get DRAMATICALLY worse than before. You could lose the nail (which does NOT grow back if it dies) and potentially damage your finger.

For the black/purple mark under the nail? Only time will get rid of that.

Sorry to hear you hurt yourself... and good luck!

Doctors will ONLY do the second option IF the injury is recent, and IF there's the risk of damage and/or infection.

drill a SMALL hole in your fingernail. It sounds painful, but it will relieve the swelling, if it's still liquid under the nail.

It should get better by itself. If in doubt, or the pain gets worse, get medical help.
