This is your idea of research when you're considering a dog in the context of the safety of your home and children?!
There are many, many, many dog sites, as well as books on breeds, for you to research. First stop, the American Kennel Club - but keep in mind that they are partially about marketing breeds and breeders, so they will soft-pedal anything negative. So the next stop is to find more canine sites. After that, go to your local library and get busy - as a father setting a good example, you DO have a library card, don't you? Finally, why don't you call up a veterinarian and make an appointment to ask about breeds that meet the requirements you specify - mastiffs might be good, but maybe another breed is better.
Um, good luck.

We ran into a Bull mastiff and it's owner at the vets office one day. He was the sweetest thing I ever saw! (His name was Winston after Churchill, the poor guy had foxtails in his paw) The owner told me that they are wonderful family dogs, very gentle with children. They were bred to protect the manor when the Lord was away at war or crusade. They are very gentle, but if they feel their family is threatened, they will come up from behind, knock the person down and sit on them until help arrives!!
Google Bull mastiff for the Kennel Club for breed info.

I believe you should do a lot more research on this breed, paying attention to what they were originally bred for and temperament. If possible, try and find a bullmastiff breeder and actually have some interaction with these dogs before you consider bringing one into your home.

Read books and talk to people about the breed. I personally like Bull Mastiffs and Mastiffs in general, but we don't mind drool being flung around, and we appreciate their protectiveness and devotion. But we are careful not to let them near someone who might mean us harm as they are likely to protect you regardless of your opinion.

Bullmastifs are great with kids and do make a good watch dog. One draw back I know of is that they drool a lot and this drool hangs down from the mouth in strings. Drool will get on you, your family and your stuff.
