Further to this, they are usually eastern europeans who can't speak english. What do they hope to achieve - the're not gonna get jumped in the street, and we're not gonna go back to their place, and we're certainly not going to return the compliment.
By the way, it's not a compliment, not the way they say it!!

To start with not all men feel the need to comment on women like this, just a select few, who have little or no manners!!
If this happens to you on a regular basis then you must have some kind of aura surrounding you!!
But please do not tar all men with the same brush, as there are still some decent men out there!!

Thankfully, looker though I am, I don't often have this problem.
It may be partly cultural. There has historically been less impetus behind women's rights movements in Eastern Europe, because, just as with religion, old customs and social norms continued in spite of the best efforts of the ruling communists.
But there are plenty of home-grown examples too. In Essex and Kent I've witnessed blokes leaning out of the window of their (white maybe?) vans, and shouting something similarly seductive and at the same time indicative of their IQ.
I've also witnessed, in Essex (!), the fair maiden on the receiving end, raise two delicate digits in the air, and turn the air blue with a considered response.

It's just a way of being nice and complimenting your good looks. It is not said with anything in mind, but to be freindly and show appreciation of you, your looks and your style as a person. It doesn't get said to the less attractive girls; and it is simply said to make you feel good. If you find that offensive, then try being less attractive and the lack of compliments may put you on a double dose of prozac!

Hmm. I've never noticed that. Maybe I'm not as beautiful and sexy to other people as I think I am.
My all purpose advice is that if people in the street are saying things you don't want to hear, pretend they're invisible and don't let it affect you. That will soften the blow later if they ever stop saying it.

It is not meant to be a compliment. It is a subtle form of sexual abuse; a way for a man to reinforce his opinion that women are objects of pleasure, and nothing more. We are here to serve them, don't you know.
Don't even acknowledge their presence, the way you would ignore a dog.

Perhaps they are unclear about the etiquette and acceptable ways of treating women in the 21st century. Perhaps they have over-inflated egos? Perhaps they thinks it a compliment and noones ever explained its insulting?

Unfortunately for you, that's what they see in some popular movies! Maybe they really think it or maybe they really think they're funny! For the ones who look cute/nice to you then smile, if not then look at them quickly with a question mark to show them it's not the proper way to get your attention. If their friends finds it funny then avoid that kind of street if possible, the only way to avoid it ;-)

(I'm a man) You are correct, it's in very poor taste, shows a complete lack of class, a lack of originality, a disrespect and a dark void of understanding concerning women.
The best way to deal with it is to tell them the same thing you've said here, and you don't have to be kind about it.

It's genetic- we are programmed to do it, it's something we have a hard time supressing... We are probably operating under the theory that if you put enough lines out in the water, sooner or later you will catch a fish.
Those of us who are married just think it, we don't say it anymore!
