the god might have feared that people may kill him

It was in violation of His command to go out into all the world to repopulate. Instead they wanted to stay as one group and build a tower to reach God. Maybe in a way thinking if they got high enough, they could be equal with God.

It was just rebelliousness that God put a stop to as He did many times in Jewish history.

those building the tower of babel had evil intentions and it is said they were actually building the tower to reach the heavens and start war with God. Those people were angry that God had kept the heavens for himself and the lower world for them.

The people were not followings God's Will to disperse and populate the whole earth. They disobeyed God. They also were likely feeling very proud over their accomplishment, a pride that roots itself on man's abilities rather than on thankfulness to God who enables us to do all things.

Hence...God intervened. Keep in mind...God does not NEED man...God chooses to use man to accomplish many of His desires...He loves us, but He does not NEED us...we need Him. God's Will will be accomplished...with or without man.

Because the populace was gathered at one place, and weren't populating the World like HE wanted them to do.

Also, they were "worshiping" what "they" did! Thier accomplishment was something that wasnt "right" in the eyes of our LORD, so, HE did what HE "knew" was right for all of us.

I wish you well..
