The F.O.P. is, but the phone solicitors calling you are not. They give about 20% of the donations they receive to the F.O.P. and keep the rest as overhead expenses. The phone solicitor himself gets more commission than the F.O.P.

Although there are legit law enforcement folks here, I think there are impersonators, also. Your best bet for an accurate answer is to call your local police department, yourself. Call the NON-emergency number, though. I have had zillions (or so) of calls in the past from "police organizations" asking for money. Whenever I have called the local PD, they've set me straight on what's legit and what isn't... most have not been legit. Some have been, though. It's been a while (years) since I've been called, though, so I don't recall which organizations were "ok" and which weren't. Then again, I haven't had a phone for a while, so...

Chances are it is legit but there are copy cat organizations that like to portray themselves as something they really aren't.
The best advise I can give is to call your local police department (non-emergency number) and ask them how to contact the local FOP for whatever it is you are interested in.
If it is a donation you are thinking of, contacting the local FOP normally means your contribution is kept locally.
