I want to cook a high in Iron as possible meal for my girlfirend with out serveing her a iron bar before someone says it. So far I have come up with a poached egg served on a bed of spinach, not exactly cuisine. Any one got any better meal ideas?

Red meat has plenty of iron. Also liver. Yum!

One reason we are so likely to have iron deficiencies is that most of the foods that are high in iron are pretty gross. Chicken, beef and pork liver, clams, oysters and sardines - not my idea of yummy. Others include beef, shrimp, turkey, beans, pumpkin seeds, and blackstrap molasses. Now, I like molasses, but blackstrap is the darkest, most bitter kind there is.

You also want to be sure the iron is absorbed, so there are foods that help the body do this. These include oranges, cantaloupe, strawberries, broccoli, brussels sprouts, tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, and white wine. Spinach, by the way, inhibits the absorption of iron, so it is not a good addition. Neither are whole grains, greens, red wine, coffee, or tea.

By the way - liver contains large quantities of vitamin A, and too much of this is not good for pregnant women, so if your girlfriend is pregnant, take that off the menu.

Definitely liver, but not everyone likes it, it can be a bit tough if not cooked correctly. Lamb or pork liver is the best option. You need to rinse it first, then place in a dish, and cover with milk, ( this may seem odd but it gives it a milder flavour and takes out most of the impurities) and leave for about an hour, then rinse of the milk and cook, with onion, pieces of bacon in a good gravy, preferably in the oven at a low temperature for at least 1 hour.

Besides cooking high iron content foods, cook your food in an iron skillet. There are some studies going back many years that showed that small amounts of iron actually leaches out of the skillet into the food being prepared...thus iron enriching everything.

Not sure what part of the country you are in but goat is high in iron. If you are in a city on the east coast or in a state like Texas you can find it. You might have luck finding it in a market that caters to Muslims or Caribbean ethnic groups

Goat tastes allot like venison. It is a red meat but has a flavor that is "sweeter" than beef. Its hard to explain but its a tasty alternative! It is also called Chevon.

Dark Green Cabbage, Green beans and Broccoli are high in iron. I don't eat meat but liver and steak are rich in iron too . You could make a nice veggie curry or rissotto with tonnes of veg in it but just add loads of the a/n greens!!

what a caring boyfriend you must be! The poached egg idea is not so crazy, you are almost describing a yummy breakfast dish - eggs Florentine, try that the morning after. For the main meal just include loads of green veg, i have been anaemic & also vegetarian so this is what my doc has recommended. (please don't listen to the person who thinks its not good to eat your greens!)

Guinness has a very high level of iron in it and makes excellent stock for cooking almost anything . Take all the other suggestions and chop them up and boil them in Guinness and add gravy granules , you'll have a lovely Irish stew .

definately the spinach and any other leafy green veg u want plus the red meat, serve it up with a glass of orange juice, oj helps in the absorbtion of iron into the body.

Liver and spinach are the only two that are very high in iron. Try making liver smothered in bacon and onions. It's really good!
