What program can I use to write subtitles for a divx file?

I've tried Premiere but for some reason everytime I import the divx file it crashes with some error and closes and I can't do anything with it. Maybe it's because it's a divx file? All I want is to write subtitles for the movie I have, isn't there a simple and light-weight program to do that? Or do I have to find some converter to turn the divx file into something else that I can work with on Premiere?

Anyone? Come on, I'm on the Software category, how hard can it be for someone here to answer me this question!?
