I have a 6 year old son and recently found a tick on his ear. He spends alot of time at my moms house. She has four dogs and an enourmous garden. We have medicated the dogs and they are clean of ticks. But it conserns me that he gets ticks on him and I might not see them as he says they dont even itch. Is there any solution for this problem?

Just be sure to check his head and hair every time he goes over. Then, if he has any symptoms of lime disease, be sure to take him to the doctor.

Start saving the ticks u find in a jar as u remove them carefully with tweezers being sure to get the mouth parts. Are they soft or hard ticks? Where do u live? Lyme disease and other nasty diseases are a concern. Inspect his body carefully not only for the ticks but any rash that may appear. There is a school of thought that after a tick bite you should receive doxycycline prophylactically but most MDs don't subscribe to that. Use a bug repellant that contains DEET and make him wear long sleeves and long pants with shoes and socks. Be vigilant and u should be ok but don't hesitate to call your MD or the Health Dept to make an id of the tick.

The best thing that you can do is put tick repellent on him every time he visits. Make sure that it is a 'tick' repellent and not just bug, because some formulas like Avon's Skin So Soft aren't as effective with repelling ticks.
Find one that has DEET in it. I know Off has tick products. There aren't supposed to be 'child specific' levels of it (it comes in different percentages) so you can use any, but be aware that a higher number doesn't provide stronger protection, it just lasts longer.
But it's like sunscreen which you will have to reapply after a certain amount of time anyway.
Other than that, you can make him tuck his pants inside of his socks to keep them from crawling up his legs (or spray the cuffs of his pants)
And don't let him wear no sleeve/short sleeved clothes while he's there.
I think there are also tick repellent clothes, but I haven't heard much about them.
You can try to keep him from rolling around in the grass as much, but hey, he's a 6 yr. old boy lol
Just keep checking him.

Besides putting repellent on your son, ask your mom to treat her garden as well. Dust it with 7 dust, but give it time to settle in before your son goes out to play in it. I know most people know that 7 dust is harmful if digested, but wanted to mention it anyway.
To remove the ticks, take a Cotton ball and put some liquid soap on it. Sit on the tick and give it a minute or so. The tick will be released without any problem at all.

If you find them you can put petroleum jelly on them they will back out. Make sure if you pull them off you get the head of the tick out. It could cause an infection. If you child gets sick please have him checked for lime disease. This illness is spread by ticks. It is totally treatable. but going undetected it can cause a lot of feeling bad and flu like symptoms. But it is not the flue and will go a way for a week but will come back if not properly diagnosed.

Really the only thing is to put repellent on him when he's visiting his grandmothers house. They have that deep woods off that repels ticks....When you do find ticks on him make sure you are getting the entire tick off of him and not by chance leaving the head stuck in there....Good luck!

Use a bug spray that keeps ticks and flees and things off. If you find a tick on him use clear nail polish around it's head. It won't be able to breath and will detatch so it can get air and the head won't be left in him to cause any problems.

if i were in your position, i would want a doctors opinion on the current tic bite, for sure, as i would be concerned about proper removal, especially involving the ear. i would also ask your son's doctor for a recommendation of a preventative that would be as safe as possible for your son to use when over at gramma's house and outdoors there. in addition, some tics can carry nasty little diseases in their blood-sucking little bodies, i would want to make certain i knew exactly what to look for as far as early signs and symptoms of possible illness. it is my wish that there is absolutely no negative outcome from this incident, and that your son can continue to safely enjoy spending time at his grandmother's house with no further problems of this sort. best of luck! sincerely, panamm
