Do you think they play a vital role towards tourism?

Certainly there is some evidence. For example, the cricket world cup in the West Indies next spring is attracting a great deal of tourism interest as cricket lovers want to go to places like St. Lucia and Barbados and there's relaxation or fun, as preferred, for their non-cricket-loving partners too.

Similarly London is gearing up for a substantial influx of tourists for the 2012 Olympics.

But I think on the whole the effect is limited to the event itself, there isn't a lot of knock-on benefit in terms of repeat tourism later. What DOES generate tourism revenues is sport-playing. People travel to play cricket and golf and tourism in places such as the Caribbean islands (for cricket) and Scotland and the Med. coasts of Spain and Portugal (for golf) benefits.
